What do you spend on groceries?

Just my two cents here:

I’ve been watching this guy on IG @meatdad1 and have learned to butcher larger pieces of meat in the kitchen like tri tip, , top sirloin, boneless pork loin, how to break down a whole chicken, the tricks to get the most out of hanger steak etc.

It’s been fun to learn and I’ve saved a ton of money since I started doing it myself. Plus I got a grinder attachment for my kitchen aid mixer so I grind my own hamburger now, it’s been a terrific experience. Boning out your own chicken really makes a dent in your grocery bill. Plus, pork is currently about half of what beef costs right now.

lemme know if anyone also knows about him?

you just need a sharp, simple knife.

ps: try a picanha cut of beef if you are having people over. Very easy to reverse sear, then crisp up the fat on the bbq. When you try it you will go “oh yeah, I know this from the Brazilian steakhouse!” It’s a very affordable cut and it’s like a tenderloin with a nice fat edge for flavor. My current favorite cut.

Ever notice how the brainwashed acolytes of Brussel sprouts cult always have to completely change and disguise the flavor of the vile things? I keep expecting people after they eat them to begin screaming like Donald Sutherland........
Hated them as a kid. Love them roasted with orange oil as an adult.

Love roasting whole Chickens. And yes I strip the meat after and freeze in portions for hot chicken sandwiches (I make good gravy) and pastas/stirfries.

As for knife I highly recommend going to a restaurant supply store. Try out different ones for grip and be prepared to pay 250+. But you won't regret it.

I mostly get groceries delivered. $100 monthly average.
$100 delivery per month, so $25/week.

I do not have a scheduled time as I tend to shop when needed during the week. Probably close to $1,000 a month including regular groceries, booze, cleaning supplies, etc.

My estimate it has easily gone up 25 35%% since before Covid.

Fast food (which it is not) has almost doubled.

Will have a small garden this year (which will probably cost more than buying season ending groceries in bulk), but it should be fun to do. I usually grow weed, and enjoy that hobby. This year I may actually resort to canning as it is looking like a viable option both expense and quality wise.

I shop a lot at my local Dollarama. The prices on such things as Basmati rice, pasta sauce, whole wheat bread, campbell's soups etc, are much lower at Dollarama then Metro or Loblaws!! I also have a fruit and vegetable store near me, where the prices of fruits and vegetables are much lower than Metro and Loblaws.

I keep all my Dollarama receipts, but I haven't figured how much per month I spend on Dollarama, yet?? Unfortunately, there are no food basics or no frills near where I live.

$250 a month on food/drinks and I shop at Loblaws only (because it's walking distance). I cook from scratch, 5 meals at a time, eat 1, store 4. No premade meals, fancy drinks like Kombucha, brand name coffee/tea. Just the simple no name brand stuff. $1.5 for 2L Soda + Milk/Oreo Cookies for Dessert. Might be cheaper if I shopped at other than Loblaws but not worth the hassle.

Used to spend $1000 a month on food/drinks because I'd do fastfood, restaurants, coffee shops, etc. Stopped because wasn't satisfying/filling (skimpy portion sizes).

I do most of my grocery shopping at Longo's or Loblaw Superstore. Occasionally Metro and Farm Boy. No Costco no Wal Mart.
I'd say I average about $100 per week. But I also take out about 3 times per week
An interesting fact about Longos.

It started as a low-class crappy grocery store in Malton, Mississauga

Then there was a great explosion and fire nearby, possibly from a gas leak.

They received a huge cash settlement ( I don't remember whether it was from the Government or the courts).

That cash settlement and infusion allowed them to expand, improve, and eventually become a well-known chain.

A conspiracy theorist might think they started the fire for the cash.

I'm lazy so my bill isn't that much, I haven't calculated but I assume it's under 300 bucks a month for sure.

I buy ground beef a day before it expires, usually 1.3kg (max 10 bucks), mix in some textured vegetable protein into it, put in potatoes and peas and it's a full cheap meal I eat basically every lunch/dinner til it runs out (usually 3-4 days).

I eat eggs for breakfast. Canned sardines/tuna for meals every few days. Greek yogurt for snacks. Peanut butter if I have to hit a certain amount of calories for the day.

I might mix it up with some cheap cuts of pork occasionally. If I buy ubereats it's from gift cards I get from work, and its usually 2 for 1 filling meals like shawarma plates.

Fishtailed my way to Longo's this morning. They had falafel/mango salad, it's delicious, I try not to pass it up.

Galen Weston and the Gang want to get rid of cashiers - not on my watch. I can use the automated system but I prefer personal contact. Being a cashier is not easy (just ask chuck). With my grocery etiquette I enjoy getting them smiling with jokes and light small talk. It helps to relieve the monotony of of their day. With Longo's points system, I can cut down the increasing cost of sustenance.

Chuck the cashier!
