Easily one of my top 5 favourite bands/artists of all time. That may be my least favourite album of theirs regardless of its' critical and commercial acclaim.
Yeah. I kind of agree. Love their first album. Aja is ok. Look at an example regarding lyric decisons though. Pretty slack.

On the origin of the song's name, Fagen says, it was inspired by football player Deacon Jones, as they like the sound of his name: "It also had two syllables, which was convenient, like 'Crimson. '" The song, however, is really about "the ultimate outsider, the flip side of the dream, boy-o . . . call me Deacon Blues."

My issue is that Aja is simply a soft jazz album. There is no edge to it, no danger. No chances taken. I think that's what made it so popular. It was totally safe.

Every other album had some actual rock on it, some brilliant guitar work, some songs that weren't easy listening or some vocal discordance by Fagen.

My favourite album is Countdown To Ecstasy. The guitar fills on Show Biz Kids are sublimely brilliant as well as the in your face solos. It was the first time that I'd heard "fuck" on a song. 5 minutes of guitar bliss. Skunk Baxter at his finest. For your listening pleasure:

Skunk is on the far right.

Aja may be soft jazz but it's perfectly crafted and timeless. The album I've listened too the most?

Machine Head by Deep Purple.

Ian Gillan went straight from Jesus Christ Superstar to Deep Purple.

My most favourite artist which includes all his albums beginning with Living And Dying In 3/4 Time that featured the song Come Monday which he wrote about being in LA on a concert while his wife was at home in Florida. He wrote and recorded so many songs that had lyrics which were very humourous and fun to sing to such as, Who's the blonde stranger out there with my wife? Volcano, Fruitcakes, and my favourite, Remittance Man. Loved listening to his music on road trips. Saw him perform at Ontario Place where the aroma of marijuana was everywhere, at intermission.went to a kiosk to get a beer, saw 3 men ordering drinks one of whom I new as a cibc manager all wearing the traditional Buffett costume, Coconut Bras and Grass Skirts. Buffett, to me was one of my all time musical artists ever. Thank goodness I have almost everything he ever recorded.
