What a Disaster this is for England. This is the one player they could
least afford to lose. What does Erickson do now? It,s exactly 6 weeks
before England,s first WC game. Surley he won,t be in game shape.
Also hurting is Michael Owen.

Bring Shearer out of retirement. :D

England's got enough depth to make-do without Rooney, but not with Owen out also. They're really hurting right now. John Terry picked up an injury today ... don't know how bad it is and Ashley Cole is just coming back. All of England probably has their praying hats on right now.

Eriksson's gotta take a gamble now on whether to include Rooney in his squad because the FIFA deadline for it is sometime in early to mid May. Personally, I think Rooney will be on the list and they will try to rush him back just as they did Beck's in the last WC.

Rooney will..

be included in the final roster. Knowing the type of athlete that Rooney is, he will play. I'm not a fan of England, but love to watch them play. My money is on the Netherlands who will probably choke once more. The only other team that chokes more is Portugal.

You can blame the insane scheduling of the EPL for Rooney breaking down. I've heard that the fractures are more comprehensive than originally diagnosed. England has the talent to make it to the finals but the squad is absolutely battered.

That's probably the main reason why Ronaldinho chose Barca over the EPL.

Not only the scheduling, but the pace and physicality of the EPL wears down the players. I think that was part of the reason why Viera went to Juventus. He was slowing down but looks fine in Italy.

I would like to see Marlon Harewood get a chance, Craig Bellamy would also be Ok but not sure he is much of a team player.

Craig Bellamy is a Welsh man.

Who are the viable options? Darren Bent, Dean Ashton?

They are in trouble, but they should still be able to make it out of the group stage and maybe Rooney will be good to go by then...

hello starting position for Peter Crouch hehehhehe

seriously England's group isnt all that difficult with the exception maybe of Sweden and a half decent Paraguay side, so they should make it out of the group stages, he is scheduled to start normal training in 6 weeks which is exactly the day that England play's its first match, so he should be ok for the second round.

England still has a half decent chance. What they lack is the 'X Factor' that Rooney gives them. Sven says he will name him to the squad even if he is only fit for the final game. Sir Alex gets final say apparently, which might rule him out.

I'm taking the high road and Italian football still gets slagged.

Viera's play has declined in the later stages of this season as well. Rooney isn't the "X-factor", Michael Owen is. If a defender matches up with him physically, Rooney tends to get lost, Owen looks for space where there isn't any.

The Brazil - Italy match will the match of the tournament.

Well that would explain it!! I think I know the reason, but I still don't understand why Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland have teams that are separate from England's (United Kingdom). Not to go too far off topic, but since Canada is the birthplace of hockey, similar to England being the home of soccer (football), it would be the equivalent of every Canadian province having a national team.

After reading my comments above, I really need a vacation.

the four separate nations for the UK goes back to a deal they struck with FIFA in its early days, in return for financial support they were awarded 4 separate teams, and it has been that way every since, good luck getting the Scots and the English to one unified team, besides do we really need to see Ryan Giggs and 10 Englishmen on one team :D

as for England's strikers problems, I have the ultimate solution for them, it is found in God aka Robbie Fowler hehehe

Scotland England and Wales make up Great Britain - Great Britain and N. Ireland make up the UK.

they are seperate countries - not like a province - theres a long history to it -

they are separate nations yes with each an individual history, but they are united as one and Scotland for example does have powers equal to that of a province controlling education, health care etc etc, a little less power with Wales, which is why England should get its own parliament, but lets not get off topic heheheh

No Rooney and no WC for England, he is the only player on the team i get excited about. He is World Class and can score great goals while taking on any defender. I do not have much faith in Lampard and Beckham, J .Cole will have to carry alot of the slack and Steve G will be relied upon heavily.

The big question is who are the strikers, Owen is coming of injury himself so how ready will he be! Crouch, Dafoe, Bent, Beatty and whoever does not get the blood pumping.

It looks like another quarter final showing for England, as per usual. There are too many good teams this year and every WC it gets harder.

I feel Italy has a great team and alot of new players to be excited about (luca toni eg). Buffon is a great goal keeper.

England announced its 23 man squad for the World Cup today

Provisional squad:

surprise or not a suprise exclusions included the crap and totally over rated Shaun Wright Phillips, the slightly better and less hyped Jermaine Defoe, I am loving that midfield of Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham and Cole, that is as the kids say"sick"

why waste a spot on Walcott? Kid hasn't made that many appearances since joining Arsenal. Darren Bent had a great year, he should have been named!

By having all those midfielders, are they going with a 4-5-1?
