How does Putin backing down make Biden look foolish?
That's the PR play he's being offered.
Putin leaves and says "See? It was always an exercise. Once again US intelligence is wrong or lying."
Everyone who dislikes Biden gets to dunk on him.

But... there's no war.
So it's a good deal, as far as I (and lots of people) are concerned.

Well, Russia is certainly trying to provoke Ukraine into firing back. Putin is mad he lost the gold medal game.
There has been a war in the Eastern Ukraine for years, now. On and off exchanges of heave fire, including artillery and missile strikes have been the norm there for a long time. It's just not being reported in the West. Ukraine is not a real state, it never has been and it's ripe for takeover- especially the Eastern part.

Putin, and Russia generally, try to punch above their weight by seeking to sow discontent to destabilize western society in general. This latest ploy was simply a bluff to use the last gasps of the weakened Trumptard Nation to dissuade further NATO membership which would further emasculate Russia.

Putin is a sociopathic egomaniac and "proud" Russians back him for his strongman persona.

No way Putin risks Russia getting humiliated militarily and his cronies pilfered billions frozen over grabbing a few meaningless Ukraine towns.

The above and $1.25 will get you a small Timmies Double Double

Mainly ethnic Russians living there.
If I was Metternicht, or Bismark or Kissenger, I would propose a solution where The Donbass region and Crimea became part of Russia. The people living there are Russians, want to join Russia, and the Ukrainians do not like them anyway.
There must be something Russia can give Ukraine in return.

Well, you give an inch, they want a mile later. It’s a slippery slope. Rewarding thuggish behavior by allowing them to invade and annex other countries is a huge mistake.

They will want more and more.
China will watch and learn, and soon think they can get away with taking Taiwan, Tibet, and other territories.

North Korea, China, and Russia will become allies, and want to destabilize the powers of the West so they can be free to continue their ways.

Could lead to WW3

The USA will join them once the right-wing authoritarian takes over.

"I'd rather be Russian than a Democrat"...if Donato was still in charge, Putin would own Camp David, renaming it Camp Kryuchkov. Faux News would lustily approve.

Once the GOP regain Congress, Biden will be impeached and the Jan 6th Committee arrested.

Let's go Donato!

They were saying he was going to attack on the 16th as well. A good bluff is indistinguishable from actual preparations for an attack.

Maybe it is a bluff, maybe it isn't. Just because an attack would be a bad idea and a stupid thing to do, doesn't mean it won't happen I guess.

Putin has more soldiers on standby than the allies who landed on Normandy.

General Eisenhower said when you have that many soldiers on standby, you either attack or go home.

135K troops, it's a Tuesday for Russia.

Also taking a statement made during an active war and trying to apply it to a currently peace time situation?
Never mind the statement is meaningless both in general and in this context. So yeah he can attack, or not. Wow, I am feeling so much of the insight right now.
If you have a burger, you either eat it, or not. Wow.

I would eat the burger. Does that mean Russia will attack? Russia can't leave 150,000 troops and their equipment sitting there forever, can they?

Why not? Do these troops need to go back to their bases to defend another threat?

Leaving them there destabilizes the West. If NATO moves in reinforcements to the Russian border, they validate Russia's ostensible claim of NATO being an active threat against Russia.

Russia could justify setting up a more permanent base there.

USA is pulling all the propaganda stops, now claiming to have a "kill list" for who gets killed and who gets sent to "camps". Also the plans for killing peaceful demonstators. But of course no actual proof given, source given, nothing but a claim.

Its ridiculous. Everyday a new "reason".

What does forever have to do with anything. The troops and equipment haven't been there forever, or even very long. As long as they are willing to foot the bills they can stay there for years. Hell if they are not being moved around much, having them sit near the border isn't much difference than having them sit on base.
Also 150K, they can spare that without emptying out their other borders not that there are any imminent threats.

Weren't you the guy claiming Russia can burn through lives [and equipment] like they were nothing. Pick a side.

Seems their presence is not destabilizing the west, but embiggining NATO. Just saw a video [didn't fact check it] that the US just sold a bunch of equipment including the M1 tank to Poland, no doubt in part due to Poitine mucking about.

Your last sentence bring a bring. Of the troops on the border, how many were already there, or at least in the region. The Ukraine has about as many troops and I can't see Russia leaving no troops in the region before all this started.

Harassing fire across the lines in Donbass is a lot different from a major invasion by 150,000 regular troops with tanks, air support and mech inf. What about that do you not understand?

And if Ukraine was "not a real country", what is it then? And why didn't it dissolve back into Greater Russia in 2015?

This could be "Breaking News". Putin is very likely to say that Trump "intervened" on the phone at the very last minute, and so he has decided NOT to invade Ukraine, but discuss further negotiations with Ukraine.
Then Trump will boast by saying that he needs to talk to Biden to discuss the "truce" that was mutually agreed in his conversation with Putin. After all he saved the world from a WWIII.
Republicans then have the political upper hand for the 2022 midterms, and Trump will be elevated back to a very likely frontrunner and favourite for the 2024 Elections.
Why not add a possible Conspiracy Theory that is rife not only on this Board, but everywhere online!!

Latvia, Estonia and a bunch of other countries the Russians "liberated" have large Russian populations who colonized them. They get their old age pension cheques and own homes there. They are not liked by the local residents, but they are stuck with them. Putin surely sees those countries as needing to get back into the fold seeing as they have Russians who need to feel included and at home where they are. Russians have Sudeten lands all over which need to be rescued.
If you want peace, prepare for war.
The so called threat of NATO on their borders is a joke. They can't even get their shit together to stand up to Russia.
