Wherever I shouldn't be
The way he died as described by media reports reminds me of Keith Carradine.
That would be David Carradine. Keith is alive and well.
As for the comments about his "poor skills", Maybe you'd like to play a game with an NHL goon? Likely the best player you've skated with. If you've never skated with NHL players, or alumni, you really have no idea just how skilled these guys are.
Ban goons, not fights. anyone who understands the game knows how, and why.
Toughest hockey player ever? Robert Gordon ___.

Of course they're skilled. But 95% of the guys they play with are more skilled and these guys have to use their fists to stay in the league instead of the skills they once thought were good enough to take them to the top. The reality kicks in, those skills they had weren't good enough.

And you don't think that might lower their self-esteem as far as how they see themselves as hockey players? Nobody grows up thinking of himself as a goon. But at some point they have to accept what they are.

Lost in a daydream of beautiful women.
It's possible that the makeup of a guy who is willing to be a hockey goon predisposes him to substance abuse. There's gotta be low self-esteem for a guy whose talent compares so lowly in relation to his colleagues that he can only stay in the league by using violence (and it's not even spontaneous).

I know I'm generalizing but it doesn't sound like an unreasonable scenario.

Wade Belak was not void of talent. He was a first round pick, 12th overall, and wasn't a borderline player.

Concussions are more serious than we ever realized in the past and it's tragically coming to light now. Boxers and wrestlers have faced PCS openly for quite some time and hockey and football are going through it now. Hockey enforcers can end up fighting 8 - 10 times in a month and end up with severe head trauma issues. When you combine that with the emptiness that most professional athletes feel in retirement, it makes for a horrible situation for the individual. This is 3 current (Belak only retired at the beginning of the summer) enforcers that have died (accidental and intentional suicide) in 4 months.

Tragic.

Robert Gordon Orr. However, his greatest skills were skating. stickhandling and shooting, not fighting. BTW: I think the toughest is Gordie Howe.
If we take the goons out of the game, there will be more room of the smaller skilled players because they wouldn't have to watch their back all the time. Just ask Crosby and Marc Savard.

I said this in another thread ...

It is time for the sports world to take care of their own. There is all these workouts and tests to evaluate players before the draft and now a days there are programs to help a player during his career, but what about after ?
It is time to help these players, who made money for and from their chosen sport, when their career is over.
At the end of the season there are exit interviews, maybe even after a player retires, but I doubt it extends much further then one meeting and a 'your always welcome here ... bye'.

Organize former player meetings across the countries with a certified counselor in charge. All retired players from all sports are welcome. Make an attempt to stay in touch with retired teammates. Organizations should keep as many as possible returning to talk with each other and the young current players. If a team has a lot have them on a schedule and/or have them talk to teams with not so many veterans.

Encourage/help them coach young people in sports. Make sure they still feel apart of life, they are still needed/wanted.

If we take the goons out of hockey, who will protect the star players on their own team? Cheap shot artists will take more liberties. Fighting does have a diffusing effect in hockey. If someone gets cheap shotted, usually there is a fight and then back to normal...but if there is no fight, you have the entire team looking for revenge the rest of the game....there are no easy answers here though.

Lower their self-esteem as an NHL player i can agree with, but their training, commitment, work ethic and paycheque wouldn`t lower their self-esteem as a person.

Because of wall of silence and indisclosure by law enforcement and media, there is speculation all over the web that Wade Belak did not commit suicide at all; but, rather that it was an accidental strangulation as a result of auto-erotic asphyxiation. The same thing that caused the death of David Carradine.

Coroner has to come out with official cause of death.
People in the media don't want to touch this with a ten foot pole because if he accidentally strangled himself while jerking off it makes the heavily tattooed Belak look like a complete idiot.
Like it's expected that kinky California rock stars or movie stars would die this way but not warrior hockey players.

The problem with not disclosing is that it leads to rampant speculation (just like Jack Layton's second cancer). Wish people would show more respect.

The thing that pisses me off the most is some of these athelte, because of there wealth or who they play for, have the resources to see the best doctors money can buy, be flowen all over north america at the expense of the team there playing for, plus, they still get paid if they don't play, except for the off season.
My question is this. Where dose the AVERAGE, weekend sports player go when they end up in the same situation as Wade.
Because I'm there now!!!!
I have wrote on Terb before about my concussion problems from my past that have got up with me and the last one I sufferd last June / 2010 ( roughly around my 22 ). I'm 50 yrs old, have to fight just to get out of bed in the morning, let alone go to work. I go to St Michaels to get meds then I'm sent on my way. I don't have the luxury of haveing my employer fly me all over North America for
treatment or pay me millions when I can't work, I, like millions of weekend players all over the world, have to suck it up and move on. I feel so sorry for Wades wife and kids, she dosen't have a husband and the kids have no father, that is the only reason I haven't ate a bullet, because of my wife and 3 kids and a granddaughter.

To take your own life to me is very selfish and thats the reason it pisses me off.

PS Wade was a good personal freind

why are we still talking about concussions and goons and depression and suicide? The media is keeping it a secret , but he died of auto-erotic asphyxiation according to an insider at the ACC. Why are they HIDING THE TRUTH? At least it was an accident. Will there be public service announcements on the dangers of masturbating with something tied tightly around your neck? Or will we continue blaming it on unrelated factors?

Who's to say it can't be a combination of all factors?

Not to mention that auto-erotic ashyxiation is for all intents and purposes a form of suicide; it's a dangerous activity that simulates near-death and can very easily turn deadly. Similar to Russian roulette.

Oh, and the stigma of being a "pervert" is worse than the stigma of depression.

What were you doing or playing to get 22 concussions. If you`re not or never were a pro athlete, what does someone do to get concussed that many times, I simply don`t understand. What is a 49 year old doing to get a concussion, is this is from your own recklessness. If you got to this condition through being a weekend athlete, then you are a selfish idiot, let your whole family down. Ever thought of what it might be like to live with you in this condition.

Just because these players are wealthy doesn`t make their quality of life any better, ask Kieth Primeau.
