Vizio is considered second or third tier. They buy all the parts, put them together, and sell at high volume. They're not Bravias, but they're not bad. Definitely do a side by side comparison if you can.

Panasonic viera TH42PZ77U

Here's a link from pricegrabber with the specs:

http://electronics.pricegrabber.com/plasma-lcd-televisions/m/49589266/details/st=product_tab/

I found it at the sears warehouse at woodbine and steeles, open box, no tax weekend, 10% off if you used your sears card (I didn't have a card but they gave it to me anyways) and 10% off if the item was energy star compliant and $100.00 off because it was missing the remote (but they found the remote after giving me the discount).

So no, I don't think you'd find another one but if you shop around like I did, when you find the deal, you go for it and IMO an advertised price for a medocre TV isn't THE deal.

The Source had a LG plasma for around the same price but even with a no hassle return, I wasn't keen on ordering a TV online until I saw the picture.

To be totally honest, and this may seem kind of lame, but one of the problems I find with such a great tv is that I often find myself being caught up in the quality of the image instead of what is actually playing on it.

If enough people are interested, I think I can get a few of these exact TVs for about $850 including taxes. I would need to order like 20 at a time.

Thanks

from what I see at my friends TV repair shop,, stay away from non brand names,,,parts are very often not available, often fail just out of warranty,,,, you get what you pay for is the analogy,,, the days of non branded stuff being (almost) as good as name brands is gone I'd say.
not to say that some non branded stuff aint OK, but muyself, Id pay the bit extra and get name brand

DO an online search, it has probably been reviewed somewhere but I was just compartive shopping around christmas and saw (I think) a westie 46" LCD next to (I think it was) a Toshiba Regza. The toshiba was a little less than double the price and I found the westie's image to be as good as the more expensive one.

It is always the best bet to just go somewhere and view side by side the various makes, models, brands. Word of warning though: I'd go and set each to factory defaults to really make a true comparison. I found BB and FS to up the brightness and contrast on the expensive TVs and adjust the cheaper TVs to make them look crappy.

is 8 sec response time enough to use a lcd tv as a computer monitor? or should i look into getting something with faster response time?

Well, it will be fine if you're doing just work related stuff but not for gaming, too slow as a computer monitor. For eg: my Viewsonice is 2 ms.....so it is 4x faster.....

For a big flat screen I wouldn't get anything slower than 4 ms.....

Man!, you must have a HUGE room!

Do you own a theatre?

some colleagues of mine in the u.s. use exclusively Vizio for shows (trade shows, displays, etc) and highly recommend them...

they had not been available in canada for a long time, but i would have no issues buying one based on their recommendations.

LOL I know why: no one would want to steal them lol. Now if it was a sony or a Kuro, that's a whole 'nother ballgame.

Funny story (pertaining to the trade show post). Back in the day when 72" plasmas were $60K, one was stolen out of McCormick Place in Chicago (notorious for having things "disappear").

So come superbowl time, buddy who "borrowed" the screen had a bunch of friends over for a superbowl party to watch it on his awesome new plasma screen. Well at halftime there was a knock at the door, it was the cops. Seems they put a lojack into the screen and traced it to him....LOL

OOPS.
