I grow tomatoes every year. :) I planted asparagus seeds two years ago and got nothing - I'm guessing the animals got to them or something. Maybe try planting the crowns?

I'll try the heritage beans. :)
Better to buy a couple of roots. I am trying asparagus seeds this year, because I have an old asparagus bed, that needs to be redone.

For dry bush beens the 2 best varieties I have grown are "Black Cocoa" and "Irish Creek Annie"

A good place for heritage seeds is "Salt Spring Seeds".

I want to taste all your tomatoes.

I grew my tomatoes from seed this year, they are doing OK. The slugs ate my pepper leaves, but I went down to the garden center that was closing up for the season and got some grown pepper plants 36 for $3 ( 3 x 12 packs ) at liquidation prices.
That is a strategy that works out well, if you have extra space in your garden fill it with close out plants that they are getting rid of this time of year.

I don't mind a big growth spurt once in a while.
Yes, that's what I'd heard.

You've reminded me of a story I read. Here's a mother talking to her grown-up daughter, reminiscing about her deceased husband:
"Even though we lived in the apartment, we always had our front garden, as your father called it. I won't tell you what he meant by our back garden.
"And of course, we had his gardening tools!
"We were always planting flowers in our front garden. One of them took root, and grew up into our beautiful daughter."

I don't know what they treat potatoes with now. I used to plant potatoes from the grocery and always had a good crop and much cheaper than seed potatoes.
This year except for a couple they never even sprouted.
I've heard they irradiate them to last longer in storage.
That ain't good for our long term health.
If I make it to next year I'll have to buy the seed ones.

Potatoes that are imported from the US are (heat) treated so they will not sprout. Canadian grown potatoes are usually not treated.

My mom had to put up 100 feet of fencing to keep the deer away from her tomatoes, lettuce, and bean plants. She has other vegetables too, like Swiss Chard.

Different stores, different growers, all Ontario and PEI, no luck at all.
I always buy a bag of potatoes and set them. Never had a problem, not this year either.

I know it's a bit early but am starting to make plans for my garden this summer. I want fairly easy plants to grow without too much maintenance...sometimes I might be out of town for a week or so.

In the past I've been successful with tomatoes, lettuce, zucchini, squash, cilantro, parsley..... Want to try artichokes this summer but have never grown them before. I know there is a lot of info out there but wanted some feedback from some of you! What do you guys (or gals) grow? And any tips....?
I'm assuming that your garden is in a backyard (and not a container patio garden, like some condo dwellers have). If so, it would worthwhile to invest in a water timer system and some weeper hose. That way, no matter what the drought tolerance of your plants are, or what your travel/vacation plans may be, you can choose to grow any vegetable you would like.

Here's an example of an inexpensive automatic water timer system that would allow you to create up to 4 watering zones with different watering schedules:

Everything you need should set you back less than $150 as a one time investment.

Really? I feel like every bag I get starts sprouting in my cupboard before I finish it. I didn't intend to grow potatoes, but when some of them got knee high looking for the sun I had to relent and plant them, they were trying so hard.

That has always been my experience in the past.
This year I bought 50lber and a number of 10lbers and got exactly zip.
One bag is still in the garage, wrinkled and still nothing.
I donno know.
Had my first two tomatoes yesterday and a couple baby zucchini are going on the BBQ tonight.
