4 pillares were supposed to come out of the ground... they had a hydraulic issue, and after about a good minutes delay, only 3 emerged. TV announcers said there was a problem..... but ppl in the crowd had no idea there was an issue at all. Wasnt' as bad as ppl are making it out to be. Could have been a lot worse.

Cheers!

Gretzky and others made sarcastic faces that showed something was clearly going wrong. Catriona standing there holding her flame at what should've been a highlight of her life was horrible.

The worst part isn't even this technical error. IMO lighting the cauldron in the stadium, and then wisking away Gretz dangerously in a truck to another cauldron was the biggest WTF.

So, all those dignitaries/ people in attendance and athletes watched the lighting of a FAKE cauldron?

If they were to go this route, what they should have done was discreetly move the entire cauldron from the stadium in the middle of the night to the waterfront. You only light the cauldron once, not twice in two separate places.

The whole night was a fiasco. They couldn't get the real Joanie Mitchell or Leonard Cohen for the biggest event in the world? Fat annoying guy insulting Americans ("we say please and thank you...and we say zed not zee") when we should be the gracious host? Overdoing it with the natives schtick and a giant polar bear; no wonder Americans think we live in igloos.

The national anthem chick sang nicely, but the choice of style was incredibly lame. She was on CTV this morning and made a point of saying that it wasn't her that did the changes to the anthem.

CTV news showed an interview with the Aussie guy who made the opening and he looked sheepish and apprehensive. He knew it sucked. Without being asked, he informed the interviewer that the process "started two years ago"!? Two freaking years? And why would he give up that info unless it was to say: "hey, don't blame me; I only had 2 years to do this!"

After the disaster of the Luge course and Cyprus mountain, I wonder who is in charge of these Olympics? Is it possible they were more concerned with building condos (that they can sell after the Olympics) than they were with the actual Olympics itself.

Thats odd... because in the same interview they asked him when he got the idea to incorporate the snow boarding entrance into the ceremony, and he said when he first arrived 5 years ago.....

Cheers!

Did he say "ten" and not "two"? I might've heard him wrong but I don't think Vancouver was awarded the Olympics that long ago.

#1 overall was the lighting of the flame in Barcelona

#1 during the winter games was the lighting at Torino.

The Vancouver fiasco was laughably inept, in other words, oh so truly Canadian. But people appeared to be in good spirits in Vancouver, especially when Gretzky was escorting the flame through the streets of Vancouver.

Then again, what ever happens in Vancouver anyway?
If ever there was a no-fun city in the country, that place would take the cake. Even Ottawa is less soporific than that place

I turned it off in disgust right around the time that Ashley McIssac came on. No comment there.

Let's just run through how totally bush-league this was for the 6 billion spent:

1. The Mounties couldn't march in cadence;
2. The aboriginal chiefs apparently decided to have a smoke rather than actually showing up - major embarassment;
3. The white clad dancers - geezus - just stand at attention or at ease or something - just stop dancing if you suck;
4. The aboriginal dancers - an hour and a half at that pace had to be tough - some could dance - the metis are half white and it showed;
5. Nelly Furtaco's dress - I love a nice arse but when your six year old niece says that she has a big one then work needs to be done;
6. Furtaco and Bryan Adams - two low talents;
7. The Anthem - hey, people should be able to sing along;
8. The torch fuck-up; a key piece is missing and Gretzky in a truck?

All in - I would say it is a terrible embarassment. CTV's coverage was abysmal. NBC's coverage softened up the rough spots but you could tell the Americans could not figure out how anything could be so fucking amateur.

I think you're being a little harsh, but I'll agree with points 1. and 2. How else should they have transported Gretzy? In a Zamboni?
Apparently the aboriginal chiefs were late because of the protesting. The Governor General arrived just a minute before the the ceremony began and there was talk of delaying the start. In an event as huge as this, there are going to be some things that occur that cant be planned for.

I suspect those who thought it was a big embarrasment would be hard to please anyway, so who gives a shit what they think.

Gretzky riding in the back of a pickup was a bit anticlimactic but all in all well done, IMO.

I thought most of it was pretty good, especially the visuals.

However I think the ending was horrible. I don't know who's dumb idea it was to locate the Olympic Flame 400 miles away form the stadium and kill the last 15 minutes by making people watch a rain-soaked Gretzky pariticipate in a marathon commercial for Chevy trucks. Talk about suffocating the life out of what's usually the climactic point of the ceremony!

Of all the places in the world you'd think Vancouver would have no problem getting lit!

Watched it with my family of a wide age bracket and not all cynics.....it was amateur hour was the general consensus.

15 minutes of Gretzky in a Chevy truck...i thought he backed Ford

10 minutes of Peter Pan doing some quasi Billie Jean scene spreading the wheat?

KD Lang can sing no doubt and did a great job with a great song

The torches resembled joints and fallic totem poles

Lip synching a revised anthem?

And last and not least....... if you're going to bring up every Canadian stereotype to display on the world stage i would have enjoyed some Beaver!

Olympics awarded to Vancouver 7 years ago. The Aussie guy got paid 30 mil. Cirque de Soleil or James Cameron would have been a blockbuster.
