Actually, going through any customs sucks.
My friend went to France recently. He told me when he got to de Gaulle, there were 2 lines: SOMETHING TO DECLARE and NOTHING TO DECLARE.

He went into the NOTHING TO DECLARE lane, and just walked straight into France. He was never asked to show his passport at all, just like it was a domestic flight in the U.S.! He switched planes in Iceland, and he was not asked for his passport there either.

Is Europe really that easy or is my buddy just lucky?

What the heck is wrong with some of you people? I travel to the US on both business and pleasure many times a year (by both air and car) with never a hassle. As long as you have your vaild passport and follow the rules there are really no problems.

Not to hijack here but.........

My *slow* buddy might just the only person who has ever been arrested for bringing pot into Jamaica for a vacation. 15 years later we still mock him for that.:D

I get stopped all the time by customs. They go through all my shit. I don't know if it is the colorful stamp filled passport, the single travelling business man, the passport photo that makes me look like a criminal, or the prick attitude I have after a long flight, but they always pull me aside to check me. I have had my clothes taken off, shoes taken off, and worst of all laptop turned on. I hate customs...but hey if its their job its their job....I'll wait with a fucking smirk on my face though...

It is for EU citizens. They cleared an entire plane while 3 non-EU citizens were waiting for passport to be stamped.

asn, the last thing you want to do is be ARROGANT with U.S. customs. Many with chip on shoulders. One was getting his jolly flashing his semi-auto at my 60 yr old Aunt at 1 crossing. 1 of my friend was detained for nearly a day, denied entry and put back on next flight as he made a scene in line-up.

It's perfectly legal to travel with 2 passports. But careful which passport you enter and exit with. Some drive-thru borderpoints do not stamp passports. I know this well as 1 of my buddy has passport from 1 of the non-treaty country as well as EU decent.

Alexa got it right with the non-flashy approach to counter profiling. Carrying excessive cash is kiss of death.

Be assertive with answers, if you hesitate, it raise suspicion.

All I can say is YIPPEEE they are doing their jobs!

Just remember one thing: They are looking for things out of the ordinary....anything, could be the way you dress, talk ANYTHING.
I don't think so. Remember the video of the 9/11 terrorists going through security? They dressed like 30 something casual dress guys with short hair going for a business meeting. The people that want to hide something will look and act extremely ordinary.

Security is different from customs.
But dressing well has never caused a problem for me. Big wads of cash, multiple-passports, bad attitudes, lack of eye contact, are the sort of things that get you noticed.

Yup. The 9/11 hijackers were already in the US and taking domestic US flights, so the only security they had to go through was *laughs* US airport security. And at that time US airport security was subcontracted out to private security firms, many of whom were shady and hired anyone and his brother, not doing much in the way of criminal background checks. It's a crappy job, scanning millions of carry-ons of already frustrated passengers, so no one really wants that job.

While I agree with requiring a passport and US customs did catch the guy who was going from Vancouver to Seattle to blow up the Space Needle because he acted nervous, I don't think it's good for both US and Canada tourism for the border guards to intimidate everyone and ask all those bizarre questions. People are tired from flying/driving, and some people are just shy. Most people are law-abiding citizens, and it certainly can't be realistic to assume that everyone is a terrorist. How about just having more friendly customer service-type people do the passport and instant criminal check, and the customer service person directs you to the real border guards if there's something funky with your background check?
