I have a blocked number because I don't want to end up on a telemarketing list. So, I call up a "ticket reseller" (aka "scalper") to enquire about Spice Girl tickets. A computer voice answers and ask: "Do you want us to call you at 555-123-4567?" How do they know my real number?

I called an agency this week using *67 and when I called back again he greeted me by name. This was using a Fido cell phone.
You can't block you number from most 800 #'s. Their systems bypass the signal that blocks your number.
Yeah, 800 numbers always get your number, because they are paying the bill.
If you can prove that your number is not being blocked when you call a non-tollfree number, though, then you ought to be placing a call to your telephone company that starts out with the words "WHAT THE FUCK"

There's a second piece of data, the CLI (Calling Line Identifier) - that's available even on blocked numbers. Your average phoneline doesn't recieve CLI data, but business phone systems (using PRI's) do usually recieve it.
There's no way to make a truly anonymous phonecall, short of a throw-away cellphone...

Please clarify the Rogers thing. If I get a telephone number from a woman I met in a bar and she has a Rogers cellphone, she sees my name and telephone number on her call display when I call?goalie000 said:

My belief was that the opposite was true, at least for Bell 800 numbers. I have had one for a long time, the phone bill only gives the exchange, but not the whole number. I think this originated before call display, where they needed to provide some proof for 800 numbers, but not enough that the company could call the consumer back and harrass them.fuji said:
