Well, the TSE/market is crashing very nicely lately. My cash is gettin itchy sitting in GICs.

Whats the opinions out there for short term gain in the TSE (short term=1 month or so).

Is it time to get back in?

The #1...

... fund manager in the world (results not size) was holding almost 40% cash at June 30. Not sure what has happened since, but Tom Stanley is the MOST cautious I have known him to be in 26 years.

Be calm, do not panic, be patient, the investment game is a marathon not a 100 yard dash
This subprime issue has much more to play out. The bond market almost always leads the stock market (over the long run)
After the market has corrected another 15-25% there will be many high quality stocks on sale

Right now the old axiom "cash is king" has never been more true. I'm waiting for a bit - there are few things more dangerous than trying to catch a falling knife. If I miss the bottom by a few days I won't be that upset. Market timing is very diffficult thing to do! I am ready to jump in with both feet, but not yet.

Maybe real estate is better bet with people losing their houses cuz they can't pay the mortgage. Might be some good deals out there..hmm

I think there are some some good bargains around now. As they say, when the tide goes out, all ships sink.

Some stocks are being sold for liquidity when the margin calls arrive. Gold stocks may or may not be in that category.
(that is what I am hoping)

It is a common phrase - so is a dead cat bounce. buy on the bounce and risk losing a bit more.
Trying to time the market is a traders game - I'm an investor. And doing just fine.

Even an investor may as well buy low.

Have you noticed that markets go down faster than they go up?
Just a word of caution..the credit rating problem maybe bigger than expected...
Buy homes witjh No cash? Really scary!

True. It may be ok to but a little in stocks that you feel are oversold but it is probably prudent, from an investing point of view, to wait until a bottom is firmly established.
If I was a trader, I would have been shorting everything I could last week, when the first bit of sh@# hit the fan.

BBB - Buying homes with no cash isn't that big a deal IF (and its a BIG IF) the people you are lending to have decent jobs, good credit etc. In Canada, anyone with a "high risk" mortgage has to pay an insurance premium so that the banks that lend will get their money back if you default. CMHC and GE Capital require borrowers to jump through a few more hoops as well. They will also not approve an application if the price is too high or the property doesn't meet their criteria.
As I understand, this is not the case south of the border. Their mess is spilling globally. Nice.

I love days like Thursday. Especially when they're followed by days like Friday. Thursday, stocks were in a garage sale. I loaded up on cheap calls in Fluor, Schlumberger, Lockheed Martin and United Technologies. Should have bought Apple and Rimm, but ran short of risk cash. Valero and CAT are also great buys at current prices. imho. Love the action.

I think we have just seen the tip of the iceberg... as more details surface about the subprime market in the USA... the sell-off will continue.... we will see a bloodbath at the TSX & US markets

I sold everything at the end of May & will buy again in early November

Simple aproach

Tally up the responses you get here, except mine, as to whether you should buy or sell, and if there is a clear winner, do the opposite.

This is not a slight at my esteemed fellow terbites, but rather a contrarian approach to the market. The contrarian believes that when everyone is screaming sell, you've seen real capitulation - then is the time to buy.

Or if you don't like this - take the general rule of thumb - Sept. and Oct. are sometimes bad months to be invested. November is generally a fun time.

Act accordingly.
