I think in recent years the city is requiring condo developers to set aside a number of units for "affordable" housing to try and avoid "ghettolization".

There is also the problem with empty condo units lately. Have they implemented a vacancy tax already?

Not sure about empty condo units but the city is and have been moving the homeless into empty hotel rooms. One hotel manager said the vacancy rate in his hotel is 90%. If you don't fear the virus, now is the time to do an outcall as hotel rooms are going cheap.

Oh well, I still love this city. Lots of good neighborhoods. Annex, queen west, Dundas west, Danforth, Beaches, Yorkville, Yonge and Eglinton, Leslieville,

I turn on the radio every morning when I wake up to catch up on the news and it seems there is almost always one, two or more shootings in the GTA. I don't remember this was the case 5-10 years ago. What's going on?

As no Airbnb's and no new people moving in I'm not surprised. The owners will be scrambling to get anyone in. So I think in Toronto it's more a market thing than owners holding spots open.

I can't believe what a shithole toronto is! Bums where everywhere I must of seen hundreds of them. There sleeping on sidewalks. There drinking and doing hard drugs right in the open.
Not to sound like grammar police but if ppl who spell like that stop coming to toronto I am kinda okay with it

In the state of the world today people are becoming a lot more aggressive and even violent. A lot of people who lost their jobs probably entering the black market to make ends meet. If the economy tanks even more, this will probably continue unfortunately.

Between Covid and the pot shops opening the Drug business is dwindling. Less parties, no nightclubs, mean a smaller market share.

They are taking the competition in a smaller market.

Now is just not the right time to visit any city. Most of interesting things are closed and people try to avoid crowded areas such as downtown so obvioulsy most of the people there would be the people that have no other place to go...homeless people for the most.

I decided to go to the Eaton's centre on the weekend haven't been in years. Shopping get something to eat few drinks.
Where do you live and when was the last time you were here?

I didn't think that was such a difficult question to answer.

What do you mean no Airbnb's. That restriction went away in early June.

And what tourists are coming in to book them?

This is a bad time to travel anywhere. Covid has changed all the major cities/destinations in a major negative way. It really sucks, considering when I finally have time to travel there is really no point cause all the fun stuff isn't possible anymore or just a shell off what it used to be. Like bars/restaurants/nightclubs/escorts.

That’s exactly the problem with Toronto. Turning everything into condos just destroys the character of the city and also further exacerbates the problem with gentrification. I’m not into urban neighborhoods myself but I remember gallivanting in Toronto in the 90s that included trips to Captain Johns, 4Ds Diner and Honest Ed’s.

Now if you walk on Yonge Street it’s as though every other business is for lease. Unless you’re OK with living in a concrete jungle, Toronto is probably not for everyone.
For the most part living in the core along Yonge st is very overrated and very over priced imo. still many amazing neighbourhoods but you have to veer off Yonge St. St Lawrence market, Queen west, king west, Roncy, Yorkville (yes I know its kind of on Yonge st but its an exception) are the best boroughs I think.

There are way better spots to go other than Yonge and Dundas area. You went to the typical tourist trap, no local will ever go. Like someone else said do your research look up reviews.

So true. I've lived in Toronto all my life and have no desire to visit that area unless I'm going to Massey Hall. So many better places to visit in the city. Obviously things are different right now. I think the OP already had his mind made up that he hates the city even before came to town.

He can't even tell us where he's visiting from or when the last time he was here.

No tourists but locals renting ABNB houses to throw huge parties and shoot a few folks.

P.S. How can downtown be dead when the City is prepared to pour $3 billion to build a "Deck Park" over the rail lines?

Airbnb is trying to crack down on any kind of parties.

And I have a very close friend who operates an Airbnb and has been booked solid since June. All kinds of people travelling on business that prefer a place with a kitchen and a home-like atmosphere to a hotel room...especially during the pandemic restrictions.

Dude, Toronto is still in Stage 2, what did you expect. Anywhere I go I have to get takeout and they wont serve me if I'm not wearing a mask, and there's a maximum of four people.

Are you from Mamora?
True when he wrote this we were in Stage 2 and not much was happening.

But this homelessness agression is becoming a real issue in Toronto. Which mainly which a problem with how bold and physically threatening they get with people minding their own business. Which everyone seems to turn a blind eye to and think we should be having a bleed heart towards.

I dread taking the TTC now for everyday as it seems a homeless person gets up in peoples faces demanding change while we are corneed and sitting. Not asking but demanding when you politely decline and getting verbally abusing which seems on edge of escalating to physical violence. And the TTC just shrugs and says they can't do anything about it.
