I did not see the game so it is hard for me to comment if it was a foul or not, but wouldn't the referee know that by making that call at that time of the game he was in essense giving the game to Italy. For me, given the context of the game, I would make sure it was a blantant foul before calling it.

It was definitely not blatant.

The Aussie defender dove feet first for the ball but missed by about a yard ahead of the Italian attacker. He was already on the ground when the attacker tripped over his back.

Very borderline call at a crucial time.

I think that the biggest concern was this call for a penalty shot ?
Lets reverse the call...can you imagine the uproar by the Italians all over the world if they lost to Australia on a penalty shot with 12 seconds left.

The call was warranted but Italians have no class!!

First of all I am not Italian nor Australian and wanted to say that the penalty shot call was warranted. What the hell was Neill diving for in front of grosso for anyhow?? I do think the dive was imbelished but either way his progress was impeded.

The far worse call was the red card to matterazzi as that only deserved a yellow card. The ref was being a hero!

Anyhow, I also saw some footage of the italians celebrating in Sydney. Have some respect for the country you live in. I hope that if Canada ever faces Italy or Portugal that you guys have enough class not to cheer against the Canada. That showed no class at all!!

As much as I think it was a bad call...let's put it this way, Australia never really created any clear cut chances, and Italy always looked far more dangerous going forward, even when they had 10 men. And Materazzi probably shouldn't have been sent off either.
