Agreed not to mention that the previous vote to abolish slavery immediately failed by another parliamentarian failed miserably - this was a strategic motion that passed and for that Henry Dundas should not be reviled. The main context is that at the time slaves represented valuable property. The elite throughout history have fought to defend property. Non gradual abolition was an alternative to giving up that property all at once. Slaves, by definition, are property. At that time in history only abolitionists (considered a radical fringe till Uncle Tom's Cabin) stopped to consider that the "property" was another human being...
