how come people go to the lottery headquarters downtown ,after winning a major jackpot, without wearing really big sunglasses,a baseball cap, a fake beard and a prosthetic nose...plus if you have a common name ( a la Dave Smith) i think you could get away anonymously with the win...no?

"The story of Craig Henshaw, multi-millionaire, began one day last September when Craig Henshaw, high school teacher, went digging through his pockets for the $35 he had left to pay for some groceries. He had just enough cash to get him through the rest of the week, before the first paycheque of the new school year would come through."

An Ontario school teacher who was in that financial situations. Was he on the drugs, had a gambling problem, WTF. Sounds like a total tard. No wonder things didn't go well.

Did you miss the part that said he spent the summer back-packing in Europe with his girlfriend?

Yes, yes I did. I skimmed. Being single I don't have time to read every line, I mean it is a different girl every night, yes a picture of a different girl every night, on the internet, an endless supply.
So now I know in what particular retarded thing he did. Adults make sure their financial affairs are in order before leaving the country on vacation.

+1. It would actually be fun (for a while at least).

heck I'd do that to almost all my relatives xDD it just seems like they're related and acquainted to me by blood only; nothing else... if they weren't blood related, i wouldn't even give them a thought

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but it doesn't sound like the guy made out too badly.
He's being smart with the money and he still has most of it. He had to quit his job which sucks, but it's not his fault, more like all the greedy motherfuckers who tried to piggyback on him. He's made out much better than all the other lottery winners who did loan their money out, and now have none of it left

Yup, that's how I read it. But I was left wondering why he wouldn't at least give himself 1 million to play with, even if that meant getting 1/20th less of an investment return.

For fun I've read various websites in the past on "what to do if you win the lottery". One thing that stuck in my mind is that it says prepare to quit your job. No matter how hard you try there will be people who resent you and will make your life unpleasant at work. My family has known a couple of people who've won decent size prizes and from what I've been told, it brought them lots of grief too.

LEt's say his take home pay is 2000 to 4000/month depending on how long he has been teaching. Take out 1K for bills, 1K for rent, he has 0 to 2K/month. Then assume he is the average canadian and has 20K in debt. So hopefully he's putting 1K to wards that..... leaving him with 0 to 1K per month. Pretty easy to end up pay cheque to paycheque.

I think the whole "having lots of money is a lot of trouble" is just what regular folks tell themselves to feel better about not winning.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but the guy claims he only had $35 to last him the week...but he has a cleaning lady?!

If I won $21M, I'd disappear for a year or two with my family.

After I finished the article I couldn't see how his experience was all that bad. The 20% of friends he lost were a waste of time anyway. At least he knows who they are. The credit card thing happens to people who don't have money too and not surprisingly the card companies handle the situation the same way (not charging you for the transactions). Can't go to work? Wow too bad, you have 21 mil why not let someone who needs it have your position and if you really want to teach start a private learning center or something. Then you could hire more teachers. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't accept those "problems".
