I like this deal Boyle brings size and his skating is decent for his size. He's experience too. Should be a solid 3rd or 4th liner.
Not that I'd be in favour of it, but are they setting themselves up for a trade using JVR?

Boyle is cap friendly, only makes $2 mil/year. So if moving JVR to make cap room Boyle is not needed. JVR is staying unless there is a deal that blows the socks off Shanny and Lou.

I like JVR too but they need some help on D and you have to give up something to get something so if they can find right body and JVR has to be sacrificed , so be it.

Now that they've obtained Boyle is Bozak expendable. Kadri has earned the right to become the 2nd line center and they still need help on the blue line.

I went to my first Leaf game last thursday. 1-1 vs Rangers.

Helluva game. I had 103 seats right behind the goal. That Leaf goalkeeper was amazing. I wonder how good he'll be 5 years from now

I'm interested in seeing which line Boyle ends up on. Certainly he adds a new dimension with his size, his net front presence alone is an upgrade, especially on a PP. He's a good PK guy as well, if memory serves me correct, so with Hyman, you've got a great PK. His FO% is better than Kadri, maybe Kadri goes to the wing now.

They get Boyle to address a weakness (depth) in the centre position so moving Kadri to the wing because of Boyle would not make sense. I can see Boyle playing on Kadri's line in a checking role or take the important face offs when the game is on the line though, but primarily he's the fourth line centre.

Does anyone here know how the wild card system works?

If the Rangers are the first wild card team in the east and the Leafs are the second wild card team, do the Rangers cross over into the Atlantic division while the Leafs cross over and try to play their way out of the Metropolitan division. Is that how it works?
ie the better wild card team gets to go and play in the weaker division?

If the playoffs started today:

The first division winner (Washington with most pts) plays wild card team 2 (Leafs)

The second division winner (Montreal) plays wild Card team 1 (Rangers)

Pits (2) vs Columbus (3)

Ott (2) vs Bos. (3)

Rangers have more pts than Montreal but Montreal gets home ice advantage being that they are division winners.

Thanks, glamphotographer.

One more question if you don't mind, if the Rangers say, beat the Habs in the opening round would they then have to cross back over into the Metropolitan division to play say, the Capitals in the second round or do they stay in their new home ie Atlantic Division and play say Boston or Ottawa in the second round.
I could see the Rangers conquering the Atlantic division if the second scenario exists.

The Rangers will play the winner of the Ottawa vs Boston Series. It's a fixed playoff bracket.

Should the Leafs beat Washington, they will play the winner of the Columbus vs Pits series.

Confusing I know. I prefer to make it simple, the top 4 teams in each division make the playoffs, then D1 vs D4 and D2 vs D3.

Okay, gracias glamphotographer.

Guess the Leafs will aim to make the top 3 in the division because that's a tough bracket over in the Metropolitan section.
And it's also a bit weird since, say, Montreal is rewarded for the first place finish in the Atlantic by being forced to play possibly the best team in the bracket either the Rangers or Columbus.
I could see a scenario where if Columbus plays the Rangers in the final game of the regular season and the loser plays the Habs instead of Pittsburgh and both teams are putting in a lame effort to win because the loser of that game is really the winner.

Thanks for the clarification on bracket set up again.

I heard them talking about Montreal's situation on sportsnet radio, that it would be better for them not finish as division winners cause they would have to play the Rangers.

As Glam said first overall in conference plays WC 2. ... I believe for the first two rounds the higher seed get home ice.

If playoffs started today.
East
Metro
1. Washington
4. Toronto(fourth seed in Metro and would remain a "Metro team" through out playoff)

2. Columbus
3. Pittsburgh

Atlantic
1. Montreal
4. New York R(fourth seed in Atlantic)

2. Ottawa
3. Boston

In second round seeded teams 1, 2 or 3 would have home ice.
Toronto or NYR would be road team regardless should one or both advance.

Third round and Stanley Cup final the team with more regular season points overall standings would have home ice.

The Leafs make a Golden Knights trade, how many players are teams allowed to protect in the entry draft?

Caroline Cameron plays to my glasses fetish.

Kadri's FO% is his weakness, while Boyle's is good. I can see when the game is on the line, Boyle being moved into certain roles. I also see the wisdom in 4 strong lines, with Boyle on the 4th, making other teams pay in a matching of lines, giving the top guys better rest. A good, solid 4th line is a great luxury to have in this league and has done it's work in a playoff run and in many a cup win.

The Leafs were overmatched in the Sharks game. Boyle didn't do so well in f/offs. Andersen was great and gave them a chance to at least gain one point but they blew it because of poor end zone coverage by Jake Gardiner with one minute + left.

If Andersen can give this kind of goaltending, Leafs have a good chance to squeak in even with the weakest defence crop amount the teams they're competing with.

Leafs are terrible when they pull the goalie.
Leafs are terrible in 3 on 3 overtime.
Leafs are terrible in shootouts.
Leafs are terrible when the other team pull their goalie.

Yet they are still right in the thick of the playoff race.

That clearly means the other teams in the race are equally terrible.
