Calling Kessel a pussy for slashing is brutal. Scott was the only one who fit that. What an absolute coward to go after Kessel. I think Phil slashed partially out of defense, and also for being quite pissed off at the sheer audacity.
Kathleen, my memory is not as good as it use to be. (They say memory is the second thing to go when you get older.) Remember that fight last year, where a guy hurt his shoulder and the winning combatant (I think he was a Penguin) let up and skated away. What were the names of those two players?

Kessel's hearing with the league is tomorrow afternoon at 4:00pm. So I guess we will find out about possible suspension around dinner time tomorrow.

I remember a fight between Chris Neil and Chara. Chris could have punched Chara's lights out but held back, the warrior's code.

I don't watch hockey much anymore but I might catch the next leaf, sabre game. I'm sure Scott will be pumped and ready to take whatever challenge he will no doubt get. But this dude is a lot bigger than anybody the leafs can throw at him and he certainly isn't afraid or intimidated by any of Toronto's enforcers. Would be interesting to see both teams send all their fighters out on the same shift that would be quite the show.

When I played hockey, we had an unwritten code. Scott broke the code.
I don't think Scott acted on his own accord. The Sabres coach Ron Rolston was the one who broke the code by sending his goon to go after other team's small skill player. The Sabres don't really have any star player other than Miller, and he paid the price for his coach's bad decision. I believe that's the reason why Bernier went after Miller.

Orr dropped Scott with that body shot last season:

McLaren also fought Scott twice last year, pretty even but edge probably went to Scott on both fights.

I'm going to guess that Kessel gets suspended for 2 games for stick swinging.

I'm also going to guess that Colborne plays in Clarkson's place, so lines would be when healthy: Lupul-Bozak-Kessel, JVR-Kadri-Colborne, Raymond-Bolland-Kulemin, and McLement with any combo of the plethora of 4th liners McLaren-Orr-Ashton-Bodie-Devane-Broll-Smith (whichever of them that don't get sent to the Marlies this week). If/when Kessel gets suspended, Raymond will probably move to his place and have one of the 4th liners take his place on the 3rd line.

Defense will be interesting, shame if Liles spends the year in the pressbox again, I really like his puck carrying ability and his power play control but he doesn't seem to fit with Carlyle. I'm guessing Phaneuf-Gunnar, Gardiner-Ranger, and the 3rd pairing should be Fraser-Franson but will probably be Rielly until Franson gets signed, hopefully within 10 games so Rielly can be sent back to junior. Looks like barring injuries, Liles is in the pressbox again.

I did not watch the game but according to an article on ESPN:

"A mismatched fight that saw Toronto's Jamie Devane have the upper hand over Buffalo's Corey Tropp sparked the melee."

How come it's ok for a 6'5 guy to fight a 6'0 guy?

Tropp & Devane were sparring beforehand, and they were willing combatants, it actually looked like Tropp dropped the gloves first and as well he's no stranger to fighting, he was just overmatched and Devane hit him straight in the face and KO'd him UFC style. That's a huge difference over an ape like Scott going after a non-fighter who he outsizes by 8 inches and 80 pounds.

Since this action by Clarkson happened in preseason why not also include the remaining 3 games the Leafs play in preseason ? It's not like his action caused a injury .

All depends on your prospective. The leafs say Tropp started the fight with a much bigger Devane and can't complain he got beaten up, the Sabres players have stated they felt Devane deliberately smashed Tropps head into the ice at the end of the fight. No matter what each side thinks there will be suspensions handed out. And Scott will no doubt be ready for retaliation later in the season, at 6'8" and 280lbs I don't think the leafs enforcers are going to scare him to much.
Both Orr and McLaren won fights over Scott last season. Scott had the nod in a second fight with McLaren.
I do not think any of them puts fear into the heart of any other.

Well it was a Leaf home game so Carlyle had the option to ice fighters or not. Carlyle made a mistake.
On the other hand Scott should not have tried Kessel.

Can't Kessel argue self-defense? Worked for George Zimmerman.
Stand your ice.
This is not Florida. lol

First swing, maybe. Second swing, not at all...

Also, while John Scott was tied up with another player, Kessel came back and hit him with the stick. I'll be surprised if he does not get suspended.

check it out at 2:18

Of course you would make it out to be worse then it is.
Kessel's first swing was almost along the ice, second swing did not make contact at all.
Now the 'spear' .... we(Leaf fans vs non Leaf fans) will never agree, anyhow ... Kessel did not spear Scott. He just made contact, more of a push with the stick.
It does not look good certainly.

When the 6'0" guy started it.

Because this is the NHL. The most fucked up league on the planet.

Kessel gets off easy, only suspended for last 3 pre season games. But he now has a record so any more stick infractions would result in a stiffer penalty as he will be looked at as a repeat offender.

If I'm not mistaken the 10 game suspension for leaving the bench must be served during regular season or playoff games only as per the rule. I've read that Clarkson may appeal but he wouldn't stand a chance as Bettman would turn it down instantly , he could then appeal to an arbitrator but I don't think that would be successful either. The rule is quite clear, first player to leave the bench to get involved in an altercation shall be suspended 10 games. You don't have to fight or even throw a punch to get 10 games you only have to get involved and Clarkson got involved the second he grabbed Scott's jersey and tried to pull him out of the scrum. it's pretty cut and dry.

Interesting to see how Leafs can get to or under the cap ... Is a high priced Leaf going to be put on the IR for a mysterious injury

Cap Geek tweeted .

With Franson, #Leafs are $1M over cap with 14F, 8D & 2G (inc. injuries, suspension). Liles demotion would put them within $79K of cap.
The buzz on twitter indicates the Leafs will demote Korbinian Holzer to the Marlies to get under the cap.
The team will run a short (NHL) roster of 23, instead of the standard 24 (18 + 2 dressed).

This is all pulled from twitter, I'm not sure exactly how the math works.
