he,s not worth a third of that.... but he,ll get it. just like Clarkson and his overpriced contract, methinks he scores less than 18 goals this year. what say you?

Ok, spun a few heads with the Ott suggestion, no doubt about to do it again. But you can never get another point of view, if too afraid to ask or make a thought.

But what about the idea of life without Phaneuf. Truth be told, I've liked him a lot this yr, and found him much more solid, and taking less risks. But I too get concerned with him getting too much ice time, and having guys walk around him. The Boston series last yr was a perfect example.

Subban has been suggested as an alternative, but I thought he just signed 2yrs with the Habs?
Dan Boyle is a free agent, but age and cost are the questions there.

So my thought is, does Toronto not have enough talent within to just let Dion go?
I get the impression Ironhead is not a fan of Liles, but I've always like him as a player. Sure he is not a physical force, but he is a veteran presence, quick, and can be counted on. So my thought is let Phaneuf test the market, send down/release Ranger, and bring in Liles. Rielly and Gardiner have shown they belong up, and Holzer is perfect if needed to replace someone injured.

Would the following be enough
Gunnarsson - Fraser
Gardiner - Liles
Rielly - Franson

My priority would be re-signing Bolland and Raymond first. If you save a ton on cap space, it allows you to chase other UFA coming up like Gaborik, Pominville or Stastny.

Unless you have a defenseman on your team like Chara, Subban or Weber who are truly impact guys, then I'd rather take the money Dion would free up and put it into a forward for more depth.
Ok, laugh away..lol
I can see the Leafs without Phaneuf. No problem.
The job for GM Nonis then would be to get another workhorse d-man along the line of Shea Weber.

I would like to resign him but to something close to the same $6.5 ... I guess $7 per is not that much of a bump with the Cap going up next season.

Subban, maybe. If I knew the Leafs were losing Phaneuf, yes I would not mind Subban.

I believe you need that big workhorse on D, and for the Leafs it is Dion.

Without Phaneuf I do not think they have enough on D unless someone takes a huge step up.

No, not a fan of Liles .... it would seem neither is Carlyle. Guess who counts more. No it is not me. :D

I do not see the Leafs as a Cup contender so I keep Ranger for the whole season. Give him that much to really see what you have.

Resigning Bolland is a must.
Raymond if he does not want too much of a raise. I have not heard much from him lately .... when was the last time he scored.

Good news on the horizon.

The Leafs defense is about to get it's spine back, Mark Fraser is expected back in the fold before Remembrance Day. I've always had a soft spot for home-boy defensemen, they've been as rare in a
Leafs uniform as Jimmy Hoffa sightings. The last that I can remember is Bob Rouse, I was too young to see Tim Horton. Twisted knees are problematic injuries, I hope he's not being rushed back due to the Leafs being consistently outshot. They need his toughness around the crease if they want to be a legitimate Cup contender.

One more in the bag... Wow, Leafs are on a roll. Top in the East.

They maybe peppered with shots, low on fuel last night... but the tandem of goalies this year are amazing. Rheim had a shut out, Bernie turned away 40 plus shots for the AB sweep.

Leaf goalies have been awesome. Leaf defense has been awful. At some point being outplayed is going to bite their asses big time!

I often think that the great goaltending may contribute to the great offense . IF you know your goalie has your back ie he will save your butt if you screw up then you might be more creative or adventurous . IF your team has a bad goalie your objective as player will become just get the puck out and you might play scared but great goal means you relax and be creative .

I think we've been saying that since they were 2-0. 8-4 since then.

LEAFS Win !

The shots thing raises it's head again. I could care less, however the Leafs could make a better attempt to cut down on the scoring chances against. (All reasonable fans know what I mean)
The Maple Leaf goalies give the forwards the chance to cheat a bit. Maybe/hopefully other teams begin to fear the odd man breaks against them and do not fully commit in the Leafs zone.

It is now at a point where it is strange when Kessel does not score. lol
That was quite the snip on his second goal in Edmonton the other night.

Glad to see Lupul score. He had not scored since the Carolina game.
Raymond of course scores after I 'call him out'. If that is how it works .... of course I will 'call him out' every other game. :thumb:
Ranger scores ! One of two shorties.
JVR's goal was a absolute killer for Calgary.
Leafs getting good goaltending, Edmonton and Calgary not so much.

Obviously it would be more comfortable if the Leafs won with convincing territorial advantage.

I believe, however, in some of these games that the Leafs had won, once they take an early lead, they can lay back a bit and concentrate on defending as opposed to having to create offensive opportunities, comes into to play. This will account for a portion of the shots differential, such that the amount they are getting outshot (frequency and differential) is partially mitigated.

I have forgotten and cannot seem to find the 2014 playoff format.
Correct me if I am wrong ...

Top three in each division get in(regardless of overall standing). Total of six per conference.
Then two wild cards, that would make eight total per conference.

Nevermind, just found it.

Saturday night in Vancouver.

I would start Bernier against the Canucks, Reimer vs the Devils Friday Nov 8 and back with Bernier vs Boston on Saturday.
I really like going into Vancouver hearing the Leafs fans cheer them on to victory.

Born and breed Western Canadian hockey fans of the local NHL team must hate it when the Leafs come to town. lol

Ashton suspended two games. That was a bad hit.

Couldn't stay away, but I'll be civil about it. Didn't watch the game tonight but by the stats the leafs are again being badly outshot which has happened quite often this season. I can't believe they have won as many games as they have. Anyways, you have to think at some point it will start costing them games. But they have a bit of a break this month as they get to play the Devils shortly who are off to a terrible start and also 3 games against the hapless Sabres so that should be 3 easy wins. It's 4-0 late in the third as I write this.

On the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Greece
Leafs were beat in all aspects of the game tonight.

RC looked like he was going to blow a gasket he was so frustrated.

Although Reimer let in four I still feel he had a good game. 47 shots is a big work load.

The Bolland injury looks like he will out for awhile.

That was a rough one tonight.
Hopefully this is a sign that having 5 out of 6 defencemen being considering 'offensive defencemen' (Franson, Phaneuf, Rielly, Gardiner, Ranger) is not a winning strategy

We need some real shutdown guys. I didn't like the decision to keep Rielly in the big leagues

Chalk it down as a wake-up call to the Leafs, sometimes the falling down to earth is better long term for the team than getting an easy win or getting by just on the strength of goalies.

Well last nights game was a fiasco and the biggest part was the Bolland injury. Hopefully he didn't get a ligament or tendon sliced. My biggest disappointment with the leafs has been the play of Kadri. Although he has skill I don't see him as a team player. He's inept in the defensive zone and the penalties he takes always seem to happen at the most inopportune times in the game. Some of the plays I see its almost like he is fighting his teammates for the puck to score goals.

What the fuck was that ?
Actually I did not think they played that bad. It is more, in my eyes, that Vancouver did a great job in shutting down the Leafs.
As Sase says above this may do them some good in the long run. They are have to show up for every game. This is the NHL, there are no free rides.

That is where being too tight against the Cap hurts. Last year they had a bit more room and Carlyle had the threat of sending guys to the Marlies.

Well at least the Cowboys won today ... barely.
