Here is an interesting article, instead of subways, use the underused GO lines:

http://www.thegridto.com/city/politics/tunnel-vision-is-plaguing-the-future-of-transit-in-this-city/

On Monday, a group called Transport Action Ontario released a proposal—the result of two years of research—suggesting that the underused GO rail corridors in and around Toronto could be easily and relatively cheaply converted into “above-ground subways” that would provide high-speed train service across the city and way out into the 905. Their proposal offers the kind of breathtaking map that gets all of us excited: seven lines snaking around the entire city with more than 50 stations in Toronto. Their research says the whole thing could be done much cheaper than the cost of subways or even LRTs, while still providing huge capacity, and may be completely finished in fewer than 20 years.

Yes Metrolink master agreement had been signed but your Minister of Transportation had been promising subway for the Scarborough Voters the last few months.

Are you now saying "He is just a minister. He does not represent the Government of Ontario"?

The Liberal standard bearer, Mitzie Hunter, the parachute candidate for this coming by-election, has been promising 100% unconditional support for the subway knowing full well "the City of Toronto council passed the subway proposal, 28 to 16, spelling out clearly the proposal needs $1.8b (minus the $85m) from the Province transfer the LRT to Subway Project."

Did the Liberal Party of Ontario rebuke her campaign statement, no sir?

Did the Liberal Minister of Transportation of Ontario rebuke her campaign statement, no sir?

Did the Liberal Premier of Ontario rebuke her campaign statement, no sir?
Are you really that thick?
When you say you support a subway to scarberia, does that mean you are willing to pay $400 million yourself?

Rebuke? Heck, Transportation Minister Glen Murray was with Mitzie at a campaign event last week, describing this exact issue. Other Liberals were also at the event, including Training, Colleges and Universities Minister Brad Duguid.

Minister Murray appeared on CP-24 on Friday -- a day after the news broke about the missing $400 million -- and told host Stephen LeDrew, "We're gonna have a subway."

But I can sort of see Fuji's point. While most citizens would think that the minister responsible for transportation speaks for the government when it comes to transit issues, maybe they've all just gone rogue on Premier Kathleen Wynne.

After all, when has Mitzie had a chance to run the promise past Premier Wynne?

Other than on Saturday, I mean: https://twitter.com/Kathleen_Wynne/status/359345592230633472/photo/1

You guys can yammer away but the fact is the amount of provincial money available has been widely known for a year.

I do think the gap will get closed. The city has lots of ways to raise 400m. Most likely the city will raise part and others will match.

Or they could delay construction of the last stop.

How about 20 or so million per year by privatizing garbage east of yonge? There's a start.....add in some property tax hike and the fact it won't be needed for 2 years to start and spread out over what at least 5 years?
Between that and some more commitments when the feds come up for election in two years this is entirely doable.

I'm partial to road tolls but I agree there are a few ways to raise it.

Just slapping down partisan twits who like to try and spin every issue into a liberal hate fest for knuckle draggingly stupid reasons.

A gap of 1.4 vs 1.8 is almost there. Ford needs to roll up his shirt sleeves, put down the crack pipe, and do some work. It is achievable assuming he starts showing up to work.

Or maybe Stintz can do the work given that this is actually her plan.

There was a columnist in the Metro today (on my phone so no link). He was discussing what they were saying a city hall(the opponents). All he kept hearing was how this would affect the Mayors re-election. And they were divided over whether of not it would help.
Nothing about the residents of Scarborough and their well beeing in this. I very glad that several parts of the city were able to put partisan politics aside to work on getting this done...if only the downtown ward reps could also come on board too we could really get moving.

Slap an extra $1,000 per household on property taxes. Let the people of Toronto pay for it. The rest of Ontario, who will most likely never use it, have paid their fair share through the wonderful donation of the federal and provincial governments.

That same provincial government spends tonnes of money for communities outside of the GTA too. Too add, Toronto is where a significant amount of provincial funding is generated.

Some additional means to raise taxes for the new subway...For Toronto residents only

* $500 annual fee for all condo unit owners. Those ugly buildings have destroyed playgrounds, added to the strain on sewer/water infrastructure and they have brought in with them numerous vehicles to the downtown core.

* $500 annual bicycle licensing fee that will go towards the subway system ($100 for children under the age of 16). All bicycle riders must be licensed and wear proper safety equipment.

* $100 eco fee for purchasing a new bicycle.

* $250 pet fee (discounts on additional pets).

* $1 surtax on admission to all entertainment venues

* $1 surtax on all alcohol and tobacco purchases

* $10 surcharge on all library memberships

* $0.50 admission fee to libraries

Road tolls on the DVP and Gardiner would be even better plus would actually incent more people to take transit.

Where do the homeless go in the hot summers and where do they go in the cold winters?

If Rob Ford has the city council re-visit the Casino in Woodbine Racetrack and approve it and other auxilliary entertainment complex, there will be enough money for the capital carrying cost and finish the subway project.

$54 m a year for Holding Fee plus additional annual property tax on the Casino building and other casino-related entertainment property. Totalling $70-80 m a year (may add even more from other operation licensing fee from shops, cafe, restaurant for example)? Very conservative estimate? Plus one time developement fee from casino building and other entertainment and shopping complex. The city can pay off this budget gap of $1b (it will be less than $1b if new property tax is being levied) in less than 10 years from now or the third or fourth year of the new subway operation.
Any news yet for the Woodbine Racetrack Casino? Any change the issue will be re-visited?

It was about a year ago that you got all excited when Karen Stintz unveiled her big plan for transit.

That plan, as you'll recall, included provincial dollars that hadn't actually been budgeted. That didn't stop you and others from praising it to the moon.

The reality is this: Transportation Minister Glen Murray and Liberal candidate Mitzie Hunter have been promising voters in Scarborough they will get a new subway.

Wynne's Liberals will either keep that promise, or they will break their promise. It's that simple.

This is 2013, not 2003. People are no longer willing to give the Liberals the benefit of the doubt when they say one thing during an election, then do the exact opposite after the election is over. Nor are they willing to tolerate Liberal excuses about how it's always somebody else's fault whenever they break their promises.

If Wynne breaks her promise, she'll wear it.

Kathleen Wynne 'optimistic' despite new byelection poll 84

BY ANTONELLA ARTUSO ,QUEEN'S PARK BUREAU CHIEF
FIRST POSTED: FRIDAY, JULY 26, 2013 10:58 AM EDT | UPDATED: FRIDAY, JULY 26, 2013 02:06 PM EDT

"The Kathleen Wynne Liberals are at serious risk of losing key ridings - including former Premier Dalton McGuinty’s Ottawa South seat - in upcoming byelections, a Forum Research poll shows.

Ottawa South Progressive Conservative candidate Matt Young had the support of 48% of people polled, ahead of Liberal John Fraser who trailed with 34%.

In Etobicoke-Lakeshore, where the PCs hope to pick up an elusive Toronto riding, their candidate Doug Holyday has moved to the front of the pack with 47% of support, compared to Liberal candidate and City Councillor Peter Milczyn who was polling at 40%.

It’s better news for the Ontario Liberals in Scarborough-Guildwood where their candidate Mitzie Hunter enjoys support of 38% of the people polled, with PC candidate Ken Kirupa following behind at 32%.

High-profile NDP candidate Adam Giambrone sits at 21% in Scarborough-Guildwood, according to Forum Research.

Voters in five ridings, including Windsor-Tecumseh and London West where previous polling shows both Liberal candidates struggling, head to the ballot stations on Aug. 1.

Wynne, in Niagara-on-the-Lake where she hosts a Council of the Federation summer meeting, said the real poll will be on election day.

“I’m optimistic about the outcomes but, as I’ve said, byelections are very tough for government and I understand that.” Wynne said Friday. “We’re going to do everything we can to be successful.”

Forum Research President Dr. Lorne Bozinoff said that PC Leader Tim Hudak has been visiting Etobicoke-Lakeshore repeatedly.

“Doug Holyday has been handling the media well and it’s beginning to show,” he said.

In Scarborough-Guildwood, Bozinoff said the race is “not over” but Hunter appears to have settled down in the lead.

As for Ottawa South, which has been held by a McGuinty for decades, voters may see that it’s time for a change, he said.

“It may be the McGuinty legacy in Ottawa South, where his brother and his father have both sat, has been too much for the Liberals’ fortunes there.” Bozinoff said."

In the case of Scarborough-Guildwood, Mitzie Hunter and the Liberals is ahead in poll with their flip flop from LRT to subway.

Sound like the people in that riding is giving Lieberal the benefit of the doubt and buying their subway promise at the face value 100%.

Tough to see Holyday leave City Hall. But he might be able to be vocal enough to keep the subway plans on track once this is over.
