I don't know the details of the case, but would like to make a general point that may apply here.

Cops need to be trained on how to use non-lethal force, hand to hand combat and tasers will do the trick.

The only time a cop should be shooting is if he is being shot at. That is how they are trained.
From what I've read your last statement is completely wrong. Cops are trained to shoot even if the suspect has a pair of scissors in hand, within an estimated 20' distance, probably after demanding to drop the weapon. They are definately not trained to shoot only after being shot at.

After 5 years and some overtime they are at $100k, or close to it, at least in Toronto.

Tasers are for the most part non-lethal. There has been a few lethal cases, but they are non-lethal. Much more so than bullets. You are just arguing semantics here.
That's about 1300 employees last count, including a lot of staff who don't work the street, so most beat cops don't and most definitely don't think the way you claim. I'm commenting on accuracy, not semantics.

If one had a mind that leaned towards conspiracies, one might think the very reason the charges were changed from Manslaughter to Murder is because proving the later is much more difficult than the former and most likely increases the chance of aquittal.

This presumption of innocence thing -- they tell me it applies to everyone, not just police. So I say, if they put police on paid holiday while awaiting trial, they should do the same for everybody.

I might be prepared to commit a crime or two, if they treated us all like they treat the police.
If you were charged with a crime that would result in your firing if found guilty, you would not be fired unless you were convicted. But you would still have to attend work.. while awaiting trial.

Really? It will be interesting to read what the real lawyers have to say on this.

It's always nice to see the arm chair quaterbacks come out and bash on a cop.
Equally said of the arm chair quarterbacks who are bashing on the cops who charged him with murder after duly investigating this case of a man being shot in the back.

First off, the "model citizen" you mock was the brother of the suspect.

Second, WE did not charge him from our armchairs. A team of independent investigators and Crown attorneys did do after an undoubtedly long and careful investigation of not only the shooting, but the inevitable fallout and risks involved in such a prosecution.

It is YOU that is armchair quarterbacking what was likely a VERY detailed and in depth sober investigation by non-political professionals.

The point made is that it is easy to sit back and pick apart something that happened and tell everyone how it should have been done. It's easy to do unless you yourself have been there and then you realize that things just aren't cut and dry when you have to make split second decisions. It's like seeing a replay and pointing out what a bumbling idiot the ref is for blowing a call.

And yes, the very non-political crown attorneys' office. Don't they have a political overseer? The Attorney General?

he was charged by the SIU..
Thank-you. Not charged by the police, but the civilian body.

Is Manslaughter as a lesser included charge still available to the Jury?
