Woods has won 14 major championships. But he's only won 2 in the last 3 years. He turns 34 in December.

Jack Nicklaus has 18 major championships. I don't think Woods is going to catch him. Jack will always be the greatest.

Say what you want as Tiger himself will prove you wrong and show the world that he is certainly the best professional golfer ever to play.

This is not to say that no one will ever be better as everyone thought that way with Nicklaus!!

By the way, Jack was how old when he put his clubs away professionally.

Why in the world would you want to bash Tiger anyways?

Jack Nicklaus won 6 of his 18 majors after the age of 34.
So, Tiger is ahead of the pace established by Jack Nicklaus (14 -12) and Nicklaus won his last major at age 46.

I was a Nicklaus fan as a kid; but, if Woods breaks his record one day I will tip my cap and defer to what the record says he is, - ie the best golfer ever.

After his long layoff, Tiger only won 6 out of 17 tournaments this year (35.3%).
The guy is washed up. :p

Woods has won at least one World Golf Championships event every year since they began in 1999.
All time wins leader in World Golf Championships events (53.3% win rate).

4 Zach Johnson 25 4,583,213
5 Kenny Perry 24 4,445,562

1. Woods has won 71 official PGA Tour events, third all time behind Sam Snead and Jack Nicklaus.
2. Woods has won 14 majors, second all time, behind Jack Nicklaus.
3. Woods is 14-1 when going into the final round of a major with at least a share of the lead.
4. Woods owns the lowest career scoring average and the most career earnings of any player in PGA Tour history.
5. Woods is one of five players (along with Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player) to have won all four professional major championships in his career, known as the Career Grand Slam, and was the youngest to do so.[1]
6. Woods is the only player to have won all four professional major championships in a row, accomplishing the feat in the 2000-2001 seasons. This feat became known as the "Tiger Slam".
7. Woods set the all-time record for most consecutive cuts made, with 142. The streak started in 1998, he set the record at the 2003 Tour Championship with 114 (passing Byron Nelson's previous record of 113 and Jack Nicklaus at 105) and extended this mark to 142 before it ended on May 13, 2005 at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship. Many consider this to be one of the most remarkable golf accomplishments of all time, given the margin by which he broke the old record and given that during the streak, the next longest streak by any other player was usually only in the 10s or 20s.[2][3][4][5]
8. Woods has won a record 29.7% (71 out of 239) of his professional starts on the PGA Tour
9. Woods is the only golfer to have won the U.S. Amateur consecutively three times (1994-96).

I'm not bashing Tiger. He hit a bit of a cold spot with respect to major championships. 2 in 3 years. So I wondered if some of the drama from the Lounge would make its way over here if I pointed that out. That's all. But its true, I don't idolize Woods. No denying that he is a great golfer though.

LOL Thanks Malibook. I was just looking for some stats on Tiger's career and thought the easiest way to get them would be to post something about Nicklaus being better. ;) I hit the jackpot with your post.

There are more good players today than in Nicklaus time and I'm old enough to know.
Miller
Trevino
Player
Watson
Palmer
Casper
Crenshaw
Floyd
Irwin
Littler
Strange
Aoki
Ballesteros

All Hall of Famers that Jack played against. How many of the current field are H of F'ers?

Nicklaus did not play in a weak era.

One person says Tiger has a tougher field but another says nobody close. Can't have it both ways.

mayfairman I think its because of his neew swing /marriage(kids) and an ever improving field (Kim,Stricker,Harrington)...but i'm sure this offseason Tiger will be training the extra incentive, knowing what you just stated .I think he'll beat Jack's record in about 4 to 5 years time..he's too good not to!

Jack got married and had kids earlier so he had these distractions sooner and as mentioned above had difficult competition.

Without a doubt, both Jack and Tiger are/were fierce competitors and were driven to win. Amazing determination. Tiger does seem to be slowing down a bit and it may take him longer than many anticipate to reach, let alone pass Jack's numbers. What if he has another injury? He's not getting younger and with his corporate empire, he has many distractions. I'm also sure in today's sophisticated world, he has a much better support group/system than Jack ever had.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tiger does pass Jack but even if he beats him by 1 or 2 majors, (or doesn't) I think they are neck and neck as to who is the best ever.

I don't think there are more great players now but there is way more depth of very good players from around the World who can win any given week, even majors, which makes Tiger being in contention so often and winning so often even more impressive.

The 4 majors are spread amongst more players now.
Aside from Tiger, today's great players will do very well to win 3 to 5 majors in their careers simply because there are so many more players who can win 1 or 2.
It is much less likely to see other guys winning 5-9 majors now like when there was less depth and it is also much less likely and more difficult for someone to win 18.

Tiger has won over half of all the WGC tournaments he has played which have extremely elite fields with all of the best players in the World competing.
His incredible winning percentages would have been somewhat less impressive in the past when there was less elite depth.

I am a big Jack and Tiger fan but overall I'd say Tiger is the best.
They are both great all around but Jack was a better consistent driver of the ball and Tiger's short game is way better than Jack's.
They are both great clutch putters but I'd give the edge to Woods.

I also believe that it's possible that Jack could have won more majors had he had something to chase.
If someone from the really old days had 25 majors, perhaps Jack would have been more driven and dedicated to catch up or at least close the gap.
It's also quite possible that Jack would have been a better player with 21 majors than the hypothetical guy with 25.

I think Byron Nelson has the most difficult golf record to break with 11 consecutive wins on the PGA Tour, although he did have help from WWII occupying some of the game's best players at the time.

Tiger's modern day streaks of 7, 6, and 5 are incredible too.

11 Wins in a Row
• Byron Nelson, 1945

7 Wins in a Row
• Tiger Woods, 2006-07

6 Wins in a Row
• Ben Hogan, 1948
• Tiger Woods, 1999-2000

5 Wins in a Row
• Tiger Woods, 2007-08

4 Wins in a Row
• Byron Nelson, 1945-46
• Jack Burke Jr., 1952
• Ben Hogan, 1953

Yes Tiger is not taking down the Majors at the pace he used too, but he is still hands down the best player on the PGA.
Going out on a limb with that one, aren't we?

LOL That must be it. The OP likes Jack Nicklaus more than Tiger Woods so he must be racist.
Hes on pace to smash his record in 3 years, but Jack Nicklaus is the best and cant be beat.

Face it, it was only a matter of time, the white man tried to keep the black man off the greens and as soon as they got in, the first black guy is smashing all the records. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Tiger will win at least one major in the upcoming year and probably two. The 2010 major locations set up very well for him:

US Open at Pebble Beach - Last time there Tiger won by a measly 15 shote.
British Open at St. Andrews - Tiger has won both times he has played there, one time by only 8 shots.
Augusta -
Whistling Straits

No doubt the OP is a racist.
saying that would be like saying that Paris Hilton is a noble humanitarian.......however i disagree with the OP...Woods has 10 solid years left ,,should beat Jack,s record by 1 or 2...
