Smoke and mirrors. The only reason the operating budget hasn't grown is the province stopped increasing the money it gives to Toronto.

The net operating budget, the money spent AND raised by the city, grew by the same amount under Ford as under Miller.

In any case no progress on the critical transit file where Ford promised subways. Looks like he was lying about that and actually never intended to build them.
Wait a minute! In the thread about the province cutting 150 million from the housing file, I was told the province had increased transfer payments overall. Now I hear they haven't? So which is it? Its all tax payer money right?

Under Miller transfers increased from McGuinty to make up for costs downloaded under Harris. The McGuinty transfers showed up in the Toronto operating budget as increased spending. Under Ford the transfers stopped increasing. Now Wynn is jiggering with it again.

You can go look these things up for yourself you don't need to treat it as a debate.

so... you support the cut then.
No, I'm not a big fan of the "Rob from Peter to give to Paul" philosophy.

The Federal Liberals used this same tactic a few years back to balance the books - They cut transfer payments to make themselves look good, however the taxpayer was stuck footing the bill at the provincial and/or municipal level.

Had Wynn announced she was cutting all-day kindergarten or reducing the size of the government through attrition and restructuring I would support her position. This however is a slap in the face of the taxpayer - She has not reduced the tax-load, just transferred it to a lower level of government.

It is a dam shame that the Liberal government is more focused on trying to create new ways to tax people instead of looking at ways to run their government more efficiently.

So all the tranfers immediately stopped when the Mayor was elected? Why was that? What suddenly changed? Smelling something here......

He's very centre-right.

If he wants to win he should run on Ford's "stop the gravy train" message
Not a ford supporter but love his agenda, but Who he even knows what John Tory is these days i think he's way more centre then right. He's the ultimate fence sitter, always non-committal on the issues not letting himself get pinned down on anything, maybe he's got to after the whole school issue.

Remember when the bike shoe was on the other foot?
BIXI was in a similar position the where the city is now.
http://www.thestar.com/news/city_ha...vest_but_mayor_rob_ford_says_nix_to_bixi.html

On Wednesday, Mayor Rob Ford made it clear where he stands.
“I’m not going to subsidize it. Absolutely not,” he told reporters. “If they can’t pay for it, then obviously we have to take other actions. It’s unfortunate. That’s why I’m always careful when people come and ask us for money.”
This is how Ford would respond to Ford about expected funding coming to an end.

How's the lack of government support and the right wing agenda working that flood in Alberta?
No insurance for most people, checks for living in hotesl.....
A real free market would just let Calgary float away.

Fair enough. So like bixi I agree that the housing portfolio should be reduced. Sell off the unused properties.

Um....insurance is the free market. I have it on my home.

As for the govt helping during natural disasters I really can't think of anyone who wouldn't want tax dollars to go there to render assistance. You really missed on this one.
