What's up guys/gals?

Currently, I have a '00 Stang vert, and really need to move into something bigger and more capable of moving people and things. I've been really interested in the Expedition for a couple years now, and wanted some input from you owners out there as to your experience with it. Any faults, opinions, musings, are appreciated.

And as an FYI, I'm thinking about it in comparison to a Denali/Yukon. So any input you have about those are appreciated too.

Thanks

If you want something that gets 11 mpg, why don't you buy two Chevy Suburbans and drive them at the same time?

And Arfur is wrong on the mileage:

Ford Expedition 4WD:

Fuel Economy
Fuel Type Regular
MPG (city) 14
MPG (highway) 17
MPG (combined) 15

Chevy Suburban 4WD:

Fuel Type Regular
MPG (city) 14
MPG (highway) 18
MPG (combined) 16

Expedition

The Expedition is a nice truck and and gas mileage with out towing a boat or trailer is about 14 hwy but with something towing behind it you are looking at 10 or less on the hwy! If you can afford and Expedition you can afford to pay for the gas!

From a fellow Stang owner:

Have you considered the Explorer? I've driven both the Expedition and the Explorer and actually prefer the Explorer - way easier to park and yet it is still a good size, also cheaper and I assume it gets better gas mileage.

I think it was the Ford Excursion I was thinking of. It gets 12 mpg, and isn't rated on the EPA ratings because it's considered a commercial vehicle.

I've heard of people getting 22 mpg in a suburban, but that could be for the diesel model.

I have an Explorer, and the mileage sucks!!! No better than an Expedition. With the Expedition you get more room, and a lot more towing capacity. I wish I had a mulligan to use on my purchase!

Offstage, instrument tuned.
My brother drives an Expedition. Says he usually gets around 15-18 mpg. Doesn't like the way it gets pushed around by the wind on the highway, and tends to track the truck grooves with the off-road tires. Did get into the cottage every weekend last winter with renovation materials through plowed and unplowed sections. Realistically, if you don't have 4 kids (he does) or consistently haul loads of crap (he does), there are lots of better choices. If you managed to live with a 'Stang and just need a little more room, try the Escape...won't break the bank or suck the fuel too bad, and still handles decently with a bit of jump.

I have both a 95 Explorer and 00 Expedition and I agree with RoadwarriorII that the Expedition does get pushed around more than the Explorer requiring more driver correctio. In fact, I prefer to take the Explorer on long trips. My mileage experience is 6 km/l (14.3 mpgUS) for the Expedition and very little difference between City and Highway if you go about 120 km/hr (75 mph) on the highway. The Explorer gets about 7 km/l (16.7 mpgUS) city and a little better on highway.

I like the Expedition, but I have a few more little quality problems with it that make me uneasy about keeping it past the extended warranty. My neighbour had a 99 and recently purchased a 2003 and he is quite pleased with it but If you don't need the extra space, I would recommend the Explorer.

The Lexus LX470 is a nice big truck. The redesigned model is to be released late next year as a 2006 model. A guy at the office drives one to/from work every day. He gets 15/18-mpg city/highway. It is a Toyota Sequoia with leather seats (LOL).

Explorer, Expedition and their equivalent Lincoln models are great trucks. However, look at the cost of regular scheduled maintenance before you go with the Fords. It maybe higher.
Actually, I think the LX470 is a tarted-up LandCruiser, not a Sequoia - it's a bit bigger than the Sequoia I believe.

Appreciate the feedback, and I knew I was in for ridicule from you "environmentalists" but to answer some questions:

1) I don't need the truck, but prefer it to the Explorer because of the size/room it offers, as well as the handling/feel on the road. I've driven both quite a bit, and the Explorer doesn't comfort me (I'm on the hwy a lot) when on the road. I can manage the Expedition.

2) I'm concerned only slightly about the mileage, but not enough that it's a huge deal. I fill up about 4 times a week in my Stang as it is. If I fill a tank twice as big, half as often, same difference.

3) The Suburban is nice (I prefer the Denali) but it's frickin expensive as hell! The Ford is cheaper to begin with, plus I get X/A plan.

Oh well. I hope any of the kinks in current models is worked out for 2004.

I would recommend the Sequoia rather than the Lexus. I test drove a limited today (dealer contest) and found it to be an incredibly smooth ride. I didn't look at the milage, but when you are looking at trucks like this milage isn't going to be a big issue. I currently have a 4runner limited and would definitely upgrade next time.

I believe the new Lexus is now based on the Sequoia rather than the older LandCruiser. I gotta say that if price isn't the issue, go with Lexus because of the service.

The Expedition does get effected by wind but all SUV do to a degree. The thing I like about it is in the stang you have to chose between this or that and with the Expedition you take both. I go to the cottage all year and the extra size and weight helps in the winter. As for milage just keep it under 120kmh and the milage is not bad. IMHO

If you want to buy a tarted up school bus then buy one.

Personally, i think 95% of SUV's are fucking ugly and over-rated.

If you need to lug stuff, why not buy a nice F-150 with the king cab and a short box with the 4 x 4. To my mind, this would make more sense than any SUV. At least you can really haul stuff.

Or better yet, buy a 5 series BMW and rent a pick up truck for 20 bucks a day when you need to haul stuff.

Well, the Durango is a FUGLY truck if I've ever seen one! Yikes! Where'd they pull that gawd-aweful design out of?

I thought about a pickup, and really like the look of the new F150. However, the reason I'm leaning towards the Expedition is that with a pickup, everyone I know will be calling me and asking for help to move shit (I can't say no...It's not in me). But even then, I'd have to buy a tonneau cover and liner. It'd basically become a SUV anyways. And for the same price (almost) as an Expedition, I'd rather go that route. I have no kids, but hockey, soccer, and other obligations sometimes require me to haul more than 4/5 people.

So, I guess it leads me to ask, is anyone here familiar with the X/A plan pricing on the 2004 model?

I always thought whoever designed the durango must of started with a mid '60's International travellall as inspiration which I didn't think looked to bad. I don't care for he looks of the Durango, but do like old IHCs. On the other hand maybe it was cheap drugs

I'm on my second Yukon and they've been great trucks with very few problems. The mileage in the city sucks, but it's not bad on the highway at all... I often get 20 mpg on the secondary highways. It tows well (I pull a 4500# boat) and is very stable.

I tested an Expedition before I bought my second Yukon. I think it was larger inside, especially in the back seat, but it seemed to be less well built. Ultimately, I chose another Yukon because the first one had been such a good vehicle. I had almost 300,000 km over 5 years on it before it started to give me grief.

The Excursion dwarfs my Yukon. You might consider a Yukon or Expedition with a Thule box on the roof for the occassional time you need more room...
