8 things that would improve the TTC:

1. Scrap the Transit City plan of light rail and street cars
2. Extend the Sheppard Subway to Markham Road
3. Build a Finch West and Finch East Subway Line
4. Make the subways automated (like they are in Vancouver)
5. Install devices in the tunnel so you can use your cellphone while on the subway
6. Re-open more washrooms and ensure they are actually cleaned
7. Install security cameras in each subway car
8. Create zones which means depending on the zone that you travel to it can cost you more $$$ (ie travelling from Greenwood to Kipling as opposed to Eglinton West to Spadina)

There is not enough need to have a Finch and a Sheppard line. Although extending the sheppard line west via Finch would be a good idea, as long as it goes all the bloody way to highway 27.

The zone idea was in place years ago and was eventually scrapped. I think that it is time it was brought back. Have fares start at 50 cents and go up to a max of $5.00

I agree about more (clean) bathrooms, cams on the subway cars and surface routes and putting repeaters into the subway tunnels so that cell phone and WI-FI could be used.

- Create procedures where when someone is sick or injured, it doesn't require the whole line to stop. I am curious how this is actually handled.
- Allow part-timers so that things can actually get done in off hours and reduce overtime costs
- Get rid of the f*&^* streetcars, all they do is block two lanes everytime they stop - don't get me started on the dedicated lines
- Create a line to the airport - world class city with no line to the airport is quite pathetic

Let's make commuting a social event.

1. a bar car

2. Pipe in the Black Eyed Peas 24/7

2. Strippers given free passes and allowed to busk on the subway.

3. Ban books, cellphones and iPods.

And add 4% to the HST to pay for it all.

But please scratch #5. Cell phones are so annoying. If you tihnk it is so necessary to conduct business while commuting, why don't you suggest work stations with computer hookups on the trains and while we're at it, install play stations with video games and maybe even massage tables with RTMs doing quick 15 minute massages.

Are you insane?? Have you even been to any city in Europe and seen how efficient it is over a subway?

1. Extend the Bloor subway Line to Sherway Gardens.
2. Build a Queen Street subway Line from Sherway to Victoria Park
3. Build an Eglinton subway line from the airport to Victoria Park
4. Extend Sheppard subway to Victoria Park
5. Utilize the CPR corridor that runs from Jane Street to Leaside for an At-grade subway from Jane to Leaside
6. Build a Jane Street LRT from Bloor to Steeles
7. Build a Victoris Park LRT from Queen to Sheppard
8. Build a Bathurst LRT from the Lake to Sheppard
9. Extend the St. Claire LRT to Jane (Walmart - why they ever stopped it at Gunns Road is mystery to me)

And then we get into GO Transit

Im have been there and yes it is efficient. A subway is much more efficient from a moving people aspect in a large city. Paris and London rely on the subways as opposed to surface tradfic. The population density in a lot of European cities is higher as well which makes transit a better solution.

Zone fares are a needed unpgrade for the TTC the same price to go from Eglinton to Lawrence on the subway as it is to go from Toronto Zoo to Longpoint? Hard sell .

The Sheppard Subway should not have been built but it was the only street Mel could sell increased densities on both sides of. It is there now so it should be extended to at least Scarborough Town Center and west out towards York University. With north south links it would at least start to provide service that most people can conveniently use. Surface transit on Eglinto s silly stickly from a transit point of view, think St Clair with 20 times the budget to go over on. If you are going to build something through the center of the city it should be a subway. That is speaking from a people moving point of view. Other adjendas have other reasons

GTA
Metro Toronto Area: 5.1 Million People, 69 Subway Stops, Ridership of 950 K
Metro Montreal Area: 3.6 Million People, 68 Subway Stops, Ridership of 1,050 K (with better hours)

Covering the service differential means that we should have about 96 - 97 stops.

Sensibly planning a roll out of the Subway system to about that scale (and getting it to the Airport as Job #1), upgrading and expanding LRT options, and holding fares @ the current rate for the next half decade would be my goals.

In my options, the TTC should provide a delay notice/memo to those passages who are late to work because the TTC buses or subways are behind the schedule. Then these people can give this notice/memo to their employers that let them know it is a TTC's fault.

Thanks for an intelligent and reasonable post. Aside from the transit unions and a few technical issues (like the RT when it snows heavily), these 2 systems are excellent. They carry about 2 million passengers each working day which saves a lot of pollution, congestion and expense for those who use them. Those who only have surface transit or their cars probably don't appreciate what a game changer it is to have the kind of instant reach the subways provide. I live near the Bloor Danforth subway line so I can walk to my nearest station in about 4 minutes and be many miles away in less than half an hour. It puts most of the city at my doorstep. I don't use transit to get back and forth from work because I'd need to transfer onto a bus and stand most of the way. But after hours and on weekends, we use it all the time to take in the whole town, have some drinks without worrying about DUI or winter driving hazards. Highly recommended for city slickers.

8 comments on your 8 things

1. Scrap the Transit City plan of light rail and street cars
The Transit City plan, if it hadn't been curtailed by the Province, provides better service than our current surface network, without the exorbitant cost of building subways.
2. Extend the Sheppard Subway to Markham Road
I don't necessarily disagree.
3. Build a Finch West and Finch East Subway Line
We shouldn't build subway lines that close together. It's unnecessary and too expensive to build this type of overkill.
4. Make the subways automated (like they are in Vancouver)
Good idea.
5. Install devices in the tunnel so you can use your cellphone while on the subway
What? You want annoying morons prattling on their phones in yet another part of the city? It's bad enough inconsiderate people make and take calls in public already, you want to ruin our commutes?
6. Re-open more washrooms and ensure they are actually cleaned
Agreed.
7. Install security cameras in each subway car
Agreed.
8. Create zones which means depending on the zone that you travel to it can cost you more $$$ (ie travelling from Greenwood to Kipling as opposed to Eglinton West to Spadina)
This is unfair to those living close to the poverty line who live in Scarborough and work in Etobicoke.

In order for #4 and #6 to work, does it mean TTC has to re-assign ticket booth attendants to clean washrooms?

Question: Where's all the money for these TERBite proposed new and extended subway lines going to come from?

At approximately $250-350 million per kilometre, it adds up quickly and no level of government is willing to pony up the cash.

That was something I wanted to mention in my rebuttal.
