Florida Rep. Mark Foley's resignation came just hours after ABC News questioned the congressman about a series of sexually explicit instant messages involving congressional pages, high school students who are under 18 years of age.

In Congress, Rep. Foley (R-FL) was part of the Republican leadership and the chairman of the House caucus on missing and exploited children.

He crusaded for tough laws against those who used the Internet for sexual exploitation of children.

Read an instant message exchange a former page says he had with Rep. Foley in 2003. Warning: sexually explicit language, reader discretion advised.

"They're sick people; they need mental health counseling," Foley said.

But, according to several former congressional pages, the congressman used the Internet to engage in sexually explicit exchanges.

They say he used the screen name Maf54 on these messages provided to ABC News

Evidently alot of the messages were much more explict than those released to the media. Very likely he'll face charges of soliciting sex with a minor, very weird considering his supposed championing of child rights. His seat was a lock for the republicans before this came out.

But wait, he's a Republican, and someone who has read the Bible. How could he possibly be a child molester ... it cannot be. According to my master teacher Cinema Face, the only bad people in the world are Muslim. I'm sitting down in shock.

A Republican, non-Muslim, doing something wrong? Impossible, purely impossible. It must be a conspiracy from those Republican haters at Fox News. I think Bin Laden did it, and the proof is buried with those weapons of mass destruction that Saddam hid with him in their secret hideout in Giants Stadium.

Ok, I'll lay off the Vitamin C. It's a sad story, glad the bastard was caught, hope the kids who worked for him aren't too messed up by this idiot.
At least Republicans have the decency to resign. The dems lionize their perverts (see Barney Frank).

This is one seat the Democrats need not worry about. The House of Reps is in the bag.

I guess he thought he had found hinself the perfect cover. Who would suspect?

Please. He would have faced expulsion charges in the House, and been booted out by his colleagues, both Democrat and Republican. He had no choice, and by seeming to be remorseful is likely thinking about his own neck in any upcoming trial. I find no decency in anything about this.

Why Wasn't Foley Stopped?

As the icky-email scandal broke wide open, Mark Foley quickly resigned his House seat. But he's left some big questions behind. Foremost among them: It looks like his activities were known by others, including leaders in his party, for months before they became public --so why didn't they do anything?

The AP brings new details about how senior Republicans received the news months ago that one of their own appeared to be soliciting a minor, and apparently did little to intervene.

The republicans can submit a new candidate, but they can't change the ballot. In other words anyone wanting to vote for a republican replacement to Foley still has to put a check next to Foley's name. How many have the stomach to do that I guess we'll see. It is Florida afterall.

In the bag for whom? The Republicans will hold both houses of Congress. Tradesports.com is starting to reflect the coming reality.

How many other GOPers covered up Foley's follies?

The collateral damage from all this will be interesting.

It comes out that Dennis Hastert, GOP Speaker of the House and a few other high ranking GOPers knew all about Foley's fondness for young Laddies and helped keep it secret instead of doing the Christian thing and stopping this pedofile Foley many months earlier!

After all recall their outrage over Clinton's hummer.

Guess loyalty to the GOP trumps those Christian morals these right-wing hypocrites are always spouting off about!..........

Washed in the aftershave of the lamb

Although it's too late for Foley himself--the party leadership has publicly thrown him to the wolves--my guess is that the rest of 'em will clutch the bible and the flag even harder. The more compromised of them will simply pull a Jimmie Swaggart, bemoan their opwn sinfulness, and praise Jesus for bringing them (back) to the path of righteousness. Had Bubba chosen to go this route, he might have softened some of more ferocious fundies durig his impeachment calvary. As a famous actor once put it: in acting, sincerity is the absolutely essential thing. Once you're learned to fake that, the rest is easy.

Foley's words during the Monica Lewinsky affair

To defuse the pedophilic aspect of all this, Foley today checked into an alcoholic center admitting he is an alcoholic. Maybe his handlers hope that will garner him some sympathy by blaming booze for his fondness for young lads.

BTW here's a link on how Foley reacted during the Monica/Bill Hummergate. The hypocrisy speaks volumes.

Republicans were aghast at Clinton's behavior, with many saying it showed he had lied and abused his power.

"It's vile," said Rep. Mark Foley, R-West Palm Beach. "It's more sad than anything else, to see someone with such potential throw it all down the drain because of a sexual addiction." -- Rep. Mark Foley, on Clinton's escapades with Monica Lewinsky

Anything that would un-seat Renolds and put Jack Davis in office is welcome.

Renolds may or may not have know about this stuff. But toss him not for what he has done rather toss him out for never doing a damned thing for WNY.
