He's making them money I guess.
Revenues have gone from $2B to $3B since the lockout.

He does for the league what Richard Peddie does for the Leafs. Makes money without improving the product.

Gary Bettman's time is up. The NHL needs a new commisioner with a new vision and focus on NHL teams that suceed in traditional Hockey markets. Even if the NHL has to retract to 21-26 teams or even less.

Those revenue have come from Montreal, Toronto, Detroit, New York, Chicago, Boston all the traditional hockey Markets. Teams like Atlanta and Pheonix are in the red. http://www.marketing-jive.com/2010/10/nhl-team-worth-2010-list-of-nhl-team.html Toronto is the franchise that earns the most revenue for the NHL and it's about time they get rewarded by winning the cup.

Since Chara's assault on Pacioretty:

Dave Bolland out with a concussion
Andy McDonald out with a concussion

That's 72!

Yes, is the infinite wisdom of the morons known as owners, Bettman's contract has been extended for 5 years.

Yes, I agree that Don should retire from HNIC and start partying with TO's finest SPs.

I apologize for placing this thread in the lounge and not the sports discussion. Honest mistake, I'll try not to do it again.

Funny that Oakville was mentioned. There soccer program is the 2nd largest in North America. San Diego's program is the largest.

Along with Air Canada, Via Rail has sent a letter to the NHL as well.

And they were traditional in 2004 as well.

Since then revenues have increased 50% even with the recession. The players also benefit from that.

To quote another Terbie who knows who he is....

"oooo, a letter"

That will certainly shake them up.

He just signed a 5 yr extension at over $7M a year. He can tell anyone to take a flying fuck and get away with it.

I haven't been a regular fan of the NHL since I left Montreal, first it was cause the Leafs suck and will always suck due to stupid fans who accept the swill offerred by MLSE and then because of the game and the fact that the Habs stopped winning.

Now we've got a league devolving into the UFC and the Leafs disease has basically spread to 5 canadian franchises with fans filling the stadiums of subpar teams year after year. Isn't it pathetic that the Coyotes can be better than half the franciss in this country?

Stop supporting the NHL & MLSE, go down to the local arena and watch the kids play for the fun of it

the only reason revenues are up is the strengthening of the loonie.........no thanks to Bettman's mismanagement.

Revenues went up 50% for the whole league.

The loonie has gone up approx 50% from when it was worth 60something cents.

The loonie affects the revenues of 6 of 30 teams, only 20% of the teams.

I'm having trouble figuring it out exactly, but if the increase in revenue was simply due to the loonie, it means the Canadian teams would have to account for probably 75-80% of total revenues for the league, which is obviously extremely far from the case. I imagine the revenues of NYR, Philly, Chic, Det and Boston would rival those of 5 Canadian teams. That leaves one more Canadian team versus 19 American teams for revenues.

The loonie is a contributing factor, but there is a lot more going on than just that.

Actually the Canadian teams would have had to account for 100% of the revenues of the whole league.

Revenues were $2B and went up by $1B. That means according to wigglee the increase of the loonie was worth $1B. You would need a starting point of $2B in revenue at a 50% increase to make a $1B increase, which means the Canadian teams account for 100% of the revenue.

You may retract your assertion any time you like, wigglee. It is not only nowhere close to reality, it is impossible.

I would take a wild guess the Canadian teams account for no more than 40% of league wide revenue. That would mean the increase of the loonie accounted for 20% of the increased revenue. Hardly the only reason.

I am not saying this in any way to support Bettman, but simply that your statement is very, very wrong.

Let's hope Bob Probert's widow and kids are enjoying the benefit.
I was only thinking about current players contracts and the revenue sharing. No idea how current revenues impact pensions.

I'll retract it right after the bobcat does...he's the one who i heard make the comment about the loonie. I think almost half the american teams are losing money, and the u.s. generates very little tv money, so that would throw off your estimations , shack.
