I believe later on in the Empire, they were paid a cash wage, but there were deductions for food and shelter. When they finished their commissions they also recieved a cash lump sum and a piece of good farmland in an effort to colonise the conquered areas with good Romans.

I'll accept that criticism if you can honestly say you have not used Google multiple times in this thread (I have used it exactly once).
