The right wing and right wing media maintains power by having an angry base, they need a target to keep their supporters angry, clicking on links, going to rallies and sending them money.
Anger is the only thing that will drive that for them now.
So the LGBTQ are just the latest target, a group small enough that the GOP think they can attack them and not lose support of the 40% of the population that still backs them.
That's all it is.
