This CBC list is a joke anyway. Bret Hart and Shania Twain has cracked the top 50. 'nuff said.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the Hit Man was a wrestler and Shania has some catchy tunes but is this the best we can come up with?

oh yeah and Avril... WTF? She may have a lot of fans and maybe one day she'll be "great" but a little too young to anoint someone as "great" after a 3 year career.

All but Don Cherry deserve to be on the list as greatest Canadian. Yes Terry Fox was incredibly inspirational and left a legacy for cancer research, But who combined wonderful personal attributes with stellar accomplishment in the face of overwhelming odds to give Canadians what lies at the heart of their identity. And who did it in a way that drew Canadians together so that now there is virtually no dissent. And who did it while keeping the books balanced. And who did it while bringing in many other innovations to help Canadians live a better live (e.g small claims court). None other than Tommy Douglas. He is head and shoulders above all the others, as attractive as those others are as candidates.

Two sides of the same coin. The Shake already picked apart your comments so I won't bother to do the same.

It's kind of funny to see that the top ten is comprised of all men, and that Margaret Atwood wouldn't be ahead of Don Cherry.

When you consider how Tommy was always so far ahead of his time, the sheer number of important causes he championed over so many years and the almost magic combination of conviction, selfless dedication and relentless determination he brought to the fight, it is easy to see why he is currently leading in votes. He had the vision and the balls to make Canadians see possibilities they wouldn't have otherwise seen. He almost single handedly defined Canada's social conscience and he ultimately made a huge difference in the lives of every one of us.

I have the utmost admiration and respect for the other candidates and their accomplishments but Tommy got my vote.

David Suzuki # 7 ??? What did he do other than all those CBC nature specials or am i missing something.

Don Cherry ahead of Gretzky from one guy who was minor league player, never won a Stanley Cup to the all time leading scorer in the NHL and multiple Stanley Cup winner. I like Don Cherry, but he isn't in the same league as Wayne Gretzky

Where's Alex Trebec? Though he's American now, he was born in Canada and host Jeopardy.
Where's Elvis Stojko?
How about the SCTV troup? They brought us Count Floyd and the scary Dr Tongue's 3D series, Bob and Doug McKenzie, William B William, the Farm Film Report, Bill Needle, Mayor Tommy Shanks amoung many others.

Guys,
lets be serious here.
Cherry doesn't even BELONG in that list...
David Suzuki is a world-renowned scientist...he's Canada's answer to Carl Sagan (albeit in a different field).
What about Sir Sanford Fleming?

Imact on Humanity and All Living Creatures

David Suzuki is probably my favourate. Terry Fox is one of my favourates too. It is hard for me to decide on who should get the honour. There are some excellent points in this forum about why people who contribute to making a better world or contributing to humanity are seriously the types of people who should be on the list.

Technology wise, one of the most useful inventions to our everyday lives was the telephone, while medical cures and antibiotics have saved and/or millions of lives.

Medicare has contribruted to Canadians in more walks of live enjoying longer, healthier longitude. Without a medicare system things would probably be a lot worse for many Canadians.

In the scheme of these kinds of issues Don Cherry does not belong in the same catagory. Entertainers, like sports figures, while they bring incredible skill and fun to the game and make the game more popular are problably better to be catagorized in another catagory or different contest altogether. I may be a huge Gretzy fan and hold him in highest respect, but in the scheme of all living creatures, humanity and the universe, the most important contributions have and impact in sustaining life.

I'm getting tired of this.
Read the entire damn thread, esp. the 3/4 page post on what Terry Fox has done.
