Some of you know that I'm looking at heading over at the end of November with a couple of friends.
Aside from airfare, am wondering what kind of cost to be looking at. Probably staying up to 14 days, may look at Bangkok, Pattaya and maybe elsewhere if the mood strikes.
What to expect for lodging, food, and most importantly - hobbying and entertainment ?!
:D

250-300$ a day you could live pretty high on the hog, 30-40 a night for a decent hotel, 70-100 for a lady for the night, the rest on food and booze.

Thanks.
Looking closer at the Pattaya area I now think we can even have fun on under $200 a day each. :D

I'm looking at Bangkok myself right now and this is what I'm budgeting:

$45-65/day on hotel. The range is wide because I haven't decided if I want something nicer with more amenities or just a place to sleep. My main requirement is that it be near Sukhumvit Road as I don't know the rest of the city.

$4/day public transit. This could go down with a prepaid pass.

$20/day on food. A bit high for Thailand, but I eat a lot and at nicer places and the last time I was there this was the case. You could easily get by on $5-10 though.

$30-100/day on "fun."

If you're staying in Bangkok, I highly recommend the Majestic Suites (stayed there 3 nights in 2006). The rooms are decent quality for the price and the location is hard to beat.

If you're a big 6ft guy who likes sleeping on king size beds and drive big hulking SUVS ... then you'll find the rooms a little small.

Majestic Suites
110-110/1 Sukhumvit Road (between Soi 4-6)
South Nana, Bangkok 10110 Thailand
Tel: 662-656-8220
Fax: 662-656-8201
msuites@loxinfo.co.th

It's right around the corner from the infamous Nana Plaza and it's parking lot.

totally up to your tastes. Food/lodging/girls to fit every budget. I've spent $400.00 on two drop dead gorgeous Qbar girls for the night, and $20.00 on a beer bar girl...it's all up to you.

Heading back to Thailand for the 3rd time in October.
By no means an expert, but certainly starting to pick some tricks of the trade up...

Just some tips:

  • Not sure where you're flying into Asia (Narita, Japan? Hong Kong?), but I've found that Air Asia (www.airasia.com) is the key to cheap flights in South-East Asia
  • Airport Express Bus (AE#3 Suvarnabhumi-Sukhumvit) will save you about $5 on your trip to the Sukhumvit area, but if you're new to Bangkok you probably should pony up the extra $5 and just grab a cab from Suvarnabhumi
  • Hotel costs will depend on your standard of living. If you want upscale, be prepared to pay over $100/night... have stayed at the Grand President on Soi 11 (family suite; nice enough, but not great value for $100+), one of those Citadines places near Asoke station (not so great value either), Ever Rich Inn (a small boutique hotel right by Gullivers and at the foot of Nana station that's cheap - $40 to $50 - with no amenities, but clean and right in the heart of Sukhumvit), and in October I'm checking out the Admiral Premier by Asoke & Soi Cowboy (had a stay 2 nights, get the 3rd free... and have heard good things about it)
  • Soi Cowboy vs. Nana - all comes down to preference, but I prefer Cowboy myself. Keep your eyes peeled for Lolitas by the Circle K (or some convenience store) on Soi 12; dirty, but worth checking out once in your lifetime
  • Gullivers & Beer Bar are great places to pick up freelancers, though freelancers can be hazardous to your health
  • Chatuchak market on the weekend can be located in the far north at the end of either the BTS or the subway. Imagine a roofed marketplace the size of a football stadium with cheap prices, and that's Chatuchak.
  • Get out of BKK fairly quickly unless you're made of money. Pattaya is the obvious choice, but while cheaper it can be much harder on your soul (and more importantly, your man-parts). Cabs can be upwards of 700 - 1000 baht ($20 - $35) from BKK to Pattaya - a better option if you don't have too much luggage is to jump on the BTS at Nana on Sukhumvit and ride it down to Ekamai station and then find the bus depot. For about $5 you can get a 1st class Air-Con bus down to Pattaya (though the bus depo in Patts is a bit farther from the beach so you may have to grab a cab to your hotel from there)
  • Check out the Sandy Springs Hotel or the Whitehouse Condotel on Soi 13 in Pattaya - both are very close to the beach & action, Walking Street, but also Soi Post Office (aka Blow Row) and Soi 6 (I'm sure you've heard of raunchy Soi 6). Both are reasonably priced as well.
  • If you get tired of shagging your brains out and want some culture, check out the Sanctuary of Truth (huge wooden-carved temple), Mini Siam (miniature villiage of all the world's great wonders, as well as Asia's wonders), or Koh Larn (a coral island you can get to by ferry for about 20 baht; ferry departs from a pier at the end of Walking Street).

That's all I got for now. Guess I didn't answer your budget question, but hopefully all that other stuff is helpful. I know, personally, I usually budget $1,000 more than however many weeks I'm planning to stay to cover the entire trip (flight, hotel, food, shopping, *entertainment*, etc.). So if I'm staying 2 weeks, I expect to pay around $3,000. I don't live too high off the hog, but I don't stay in $17/night hotels or buy too many lady drinks for the bargirls either.

Have fun!

Been there a bunch. I usually keep a record of expenses.
The most recent trip was a short one.
8 days in BK
$3000 all in. Air, hotel, meals, girls etc.

no way! are you serious?!?
The thing about Thailand is I am worried that I can not tell the different between ladyboy who got it done and a real lady.

I think I'm quite good at knowing who the imposters are. I met this beautiful girl there, though she did have an 8 inch clit. If it's your first trip to bkk you may get fustrated with all the scaming from cab drivers to restuarants. Go to a massage place called Poseidon. Pronounced po sek don. On 3 rd floor you will find some if the most beautiful women. It's more expensive 2500 and up for 90 Minsk but that's like 100 here. Hey don't travel half wAy arround the world to screw ugly chicks.

Most ladyboys are pretty cool if you've made a mistake. Either just pay them whatever price you had earlier agreed to and call it just bad luck, or give them a trip and thank them for their time. The real issue you should be concerned about is that the ladyboys in Thailand are notorious pickpockets. Be careful if walking alone at night because if they see a foreigner on their own and no other tourists around (other Thais won't help you out, in fact they'll side with the ladyboys -- it's nothing against foreigners, just that Thais always help Thais in any situation), then you'll be ripe for a swarming.

After more reseach I've come to the conclusion that the best budget is no budget. I'm just gonna let it ride man!

Good to see things haven't change much over the year.

In Pattaya & Phuket, can hire a licenced taxi driver or moped for the day. Don't have to worry about parking & easy to get around.

Follow the crowd, street food, food court, local eateries can be amazing. If there's lots of fellow dress down tourists, can find some real jewels with tasty safe cheap Thai food.

Tuk Tuk & unlic'd taxi drivers can be real scammers prey on tourist. Beware!

Novetel Phuket offers great promotions. Short walk from most action.

Best way to travel, imo. Be flexible, if you hit place with lotsa of babe, go big. When you feel like living local, go budget. GT usually luck out that way.
