Open Carry Activist Charged With Shooting Ex-Husband And Stepdaughter Dead

A woman charged with shooting and killing her ex-husband and stepdaughter has strong connections to groups advocating for expanding open carry gun laws in Texas.

Local newsoutlets on Wednesday reported that Veronica Dunnachie was arrested and charged with shooting and killing her ex-husband and step daughter.

Buried in some of the initial reporting on the arrest of Dunnachie seems to have been an active participant in open carry groups in Texas. The local ABC affiliate, WFAA, noted that Dunnachie's Facebook page is photos of her engaged in open carry firearm advocacy activities. WFAA also noted that one of her profile pictures included the text "Sometimes removing some people out of your life makes room for better people."

Veronica and Russell Dunnachie were going through a divorce, according to court records.

Reached by TPM on Thursday, Arlington, Texas police pointed to Dunnachie's Facebook page and the photos on there showing her involved in Open Carry Tarrant County and pictures of Open Carry Texas.

"We aren't in a position to give someone's affiliation to a group or organization but if you go to her Facebook page, it's pretty clear," Arlington Police Department Officer Tiara Richard told TPM, referring to Open Carry Tarrant County.

Those two groups, Open Carry Tarrant County and Open Carry Texas, are Second Amendment rights groups that want to expand Texas law to allow carrying all weapons openly. Right now Texas law just allows for carrying guns openly.

"We're comfortable with the charge of capital murder that she intentionally killed more than one person," Arlington Police Department Sgt. Jeffrey Houston told TPM.

I was wondering why open carry groups would have any reason to exist in a state like Texas, where surely the state gov't has completely capitulated to the gun lobby already. Then I saw this...

Nice to see the gun nuts keep pushing the envelope. :)

By the way, this isn't my idea of a hottie:

Guns are not the problem, people are the problem. Her being a legal firearms ownership advocate has nothing to do with her murdering two people by the way, she could just as easily have done it with a knife.
Say no to insanity, not to guns..............

That's right! Guns don't kill people. People kill people.... with guns.

Still, there's absolutely NO connection - and you'd be a fool and a communist to make one - between having a gun and shooting someone with it, and not having a gun and not shooting someone.

(again with the Bill Hicks? Why yes. Yes indeedy.)

Texas has had open carry of handguns for something like forever. Vermont is the safest state in the union, and they have no gun laws, meaning that any adult who is not a felon, a mental case or is not dishonourably discharged from the armed forces can open carry or carry concealed.

Ever hear of a lobby that has 85 million members? That represents the number of individuals in the US who legally possess a handgun and who happen to vote. So the so-called gun lobby you refer to is a bit more than a small group of loudmouths. It represents a massive block of voters. The politicians carry out the policies that the population wants. Tha includes gun owners. Otherwise, they get thrown out of office.

Canadian politicians should take note that such a comparable gun lobby exists in Canada. Not organized by any means, but composed of 2 million licensed gun owners who actually vote. Dion and Ignatieff shot themselves in the foot by turning these voters against them by wanting to confiscate significant numbers of their firearms. That, I am convinced, is what gave Harper a majority.

If this person was the only one in the US to have a handgun, then I would agree that letting her have one was a bad idea. But there are over 85 million Americans who legally own one. So this shooting is statistically insignificant, compared to everyday hazards such as being involved in car accidents, drowning in a swimming pool or choking on food.

Oh, absolutely. She isn't the only person in the US to have a handgun so the obvious takeaway from this tragic tale is everyone needs to have a handgun! And the fact that the USA, with its insanely high rates of gun ownership, has the highest rate of gun deaths in the developed world (several times over) is utterly irrelevant. Because reasons.

Again, there is absolutely NO connection - and you'd be a fool and a communist to make one - between having a gun and shooting someone with it, and not having a gun and not shooting someone.
