Or maybe he realizes he's 72.....and should be retiring into a new job of consulting DOFO on how to best pimp his ride??
As soon as the string-pulling became known, he withdrew his name from the consideration, until the whole matter could be cleared up. Dougie's dimwits have only made things muddier since, so now he's said, "Not interested, thanks". All along, he's been the only creditable person in this botched business. And now the sad mess Ford made of the Deputy Commissioner's long service, by trying to force his pick still remains to be dealt with.
Anotherthought experiment: Imagine if the best candidate — after Taverner — is clearly the current* Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair.

* Although the Dougie's A-G says Blair was properly fired (though not by her, oh no!) his lawyer says (and it appears correctly) that he can only be fired after a Police Act hearing. So he's still a cop, and possibly still at the rank, even if the work is now in the hands of someone else. But i don't believe anything says he can't re-apply for the top job. And of course his application will be reviewed with the most scrupulous fairness, and entirely without personal animus.
Thank fucking God. Ford's whole family are a pack of dodgy, quasi-criminals. He wants to run the government of Ontario like a Drug Kingpin runs his territory. I'm hardly a fan of the cops, but having them in that man's pocket was a nightmare scenario.
Pretty weak sauce, since the commissioner also found that the way the selection process was changed to make Taverner eligible in the first place was deeply flawed.
Sorta like saying he didn't cheat but the game was rigged. Anyway it's over now. Or would be, if Dougie wasn't telling fish-story whoppers about being "completely exonerated". As with Justin and SNC, Dougie hoped he could get what he wanted with some manoeuvring behind the scenes, only — like Justin again — he wasn't clever enough to see how tiny 'behind-the-scenes' is, when you're Top Dog.
I did like the Commissioner revealing Dougie's first offer to his friend Ron Taverner was President of Community Relations at Ontario Cannabis Stores. Ron looks better all the time, because he turned it down.
It appears that the Commissioner's concerns had to do with whether the interview process was "fair" to other candidates. However, Integrity Commissioners are not experts on hiring or recruitment practices, nor are they responsible for ensuring that the best candidates fill government openings. Governments are responsible for that.
Thankfully, his actual ruling respected and was restricted to the true scope of his expertise and authority - whether ethical rules were violated. Too bad he couldn't resist the temptation to say more.
