So this thread is just another excuse to bitch about teachers?
But nice that you think some guy driving around, ticketing speeders, and directing traffic at construction sites deserves 100K.
Not complaining about teachers...complaining about the teacher unions who are always complaining.

I think the cops that are there to defend us and put themselves into dangerous situations are worth more money than the elementary school teacher teaching with an unruly group of preteens.

Hmm. Didn't seem to specify the difference here.
A yearly earnings of 100K is a lot of money but not what it used to be...the point I was making in the original post was teachers have increased 200% in the last year of being on the Sunshine list, and yet they are the biggest complainers of the way they are being treated.

And I think people in charge of educating our future are pretty important. Yes, there is a possibility that police will be put in a dangerous situation but most cops never need to fire their gun on the job.

Elementary teachers have it soft...and are never, ever, not once put in a dangerous situation.

When I lived in Montreal, there was a transit strike almost every year. The subway/ metro drivers, bus drivers, mechanics, maintenance workers, ticket collectors, etc, all had different unions, and their contacts ran for different periods. The union negotiator, (brother-in-law of the Minister of Tranport), would demand a six per cent raise. The government would counter with four. The union would say we don't budge on six. In comes the number cruncher, and says that the difference in cost between six and four percent raise, over the length of the contract is $10 million, and the savings per day during a strike would be $1.1 million. They shake hands, and agree that the raise will be six percent, and the strike will last for nine days.

I've always felt that the main purpose of unions was to allow stupid people to be able to afford cars.

Spoken like a true self appointed expert on education who feels qualified because at some point in his life he was a student. Your posting is beyond ridiculous, the amount of stress and pressure that elementary teachers face would make most people last 5 minutes, these arent the goofy Little Rascals kids you went to school with, because we are now a society full of dimwits who are capable of reproducing, guess how their kids turn out and then they are sent to school to absolutely amazing dedicated teachers that have to deal with them about 8 hours a day. But keep spewing your neo con nonsense because you enjoy your buck a beer an lower taxes, at the expense of having a society that disrespects one of the most important professions.

The point of unions is to protect their members who vote for them and have their best interests.
I used to be the Administrator of a Teamsters pension plan, many years ago. As a group, they aren't the sharpest pencils in the box. I used to think that they elected their delegates based on penis size, and bribed the Black members to not run for election. My ex boss was in the sauna with one of the union trustees, and described his member as 'a roll of tar paper'.

True Teamster stories:

One new retiree wanted to have his pension directly deposited to his bank account. Attached to his application was a blank cheque with "Avoid" written on it.

One caller lived at RR4, Sterling, Ontario. I didn't know at the time that it's near Peterborough. I asked him where Sterling was, and he said "It's about four miles from here".

A guy was applying for disability pension, with the commencement date based on the date his doctor signed the examining physician's statement. He didn't include all of the paperwork the first time, so I told him that he'd be paid from a specific date, but wouldn't have any money until well past that date. He said "That's OK, as long as it's paid radioactively".

One guy got his annual statement, and said "I've been working for xxxxxxxx Transport for 22 years and 9 months, and my statement says 22.750 years. Where's the other month and a half?".

I told that story to the vice-president of the Local union, and he said "So where is it?"

A guy had a scheme whereby he could increase the amount of his pension slightly by delaying his application. I told him that was true, but it would take 32 years to make up for the payment he didn't get at an earlier start date. He said "Oh...I think limited, eh.".

One guy brought an opened box of chocolate covered cherries to the union local Christmas party. Inside the box, all of the chocolates had a thumb-sized indentation, and sticky cherry syrup was everywhere. When asked why he'd done that, he said "I wanted to make sure there was a cherry in every one.".

On a life insurance claim, the doctor had listed the cause of death as "Anoxia due to hanging, accidental asphyxiation associated with sexual fetish".

A guy opened his wallet to take out his birth certificate so I could make a photocopy. Inside was a photograph of an attractive young lady. "That's my girlfriend", he said proudly. I told him that if his wife sees the picture, he should tell her it came with the wallet.

A caller's profile was missing the beneficiary information. I asked him if he had a spouse, and he said "Yes, dear.".

I phoned a guy, and his wife answered. I said "May I speak to Mr XXXXXXX?". His wife said "Speaking".

On the other hand, what role do police play in preparing the next generation to be positive members of society?
Are they suppose to have a role in preparing the next generation to be positive members of society?

...or is their role to protect everyone in society?

Are teachers suppose to be dealing with violent situations?

(you think that might have been my point?)

Some younger cops don't understand the difference between their job and that of a litigating attorney. They think that when someone calls 911 and wants to have charges filed against someone, They should 'take the case' for 'the victim', whether or not there is sufficient evidence that the allegations against 'the perp' are true. Any case that goes before a Judge means automatic overtime for the arresting officer somewhere down the road, and the total number of arrests made that lead to charges being filed leads to faster promotion. They can also count on other cops who are otherwise honest to look the other way, and accidentally on purpose fudge some small details, to assist their comrade in his goal to maximize his income with a minimum of education and moral compass.

The Sunshine List does matter. The percentage of individual taxpayers that make over $100,000 in salary annually is less than 5% total - in the private sector the number is lower.
Yes the Sunshine List it is not indexed and thank god for that. Because that would be used to hide the fact that within a few years over 100,000 Ontario teachers will be making $100,000 annually with their automatic raises. Plus benefits that no one else can dream of in the private sector.

That's just the teachers. Add in University, Colleges, Hospitals, Municipalities, Police, Fire etc. Ontario will be bankrupt.

Deferred compensation (pensions) plus base salary means the average teacher really makes $150,000+ for each year worked.
The gold plated fully indexed defined benefit plans are obscene - teachers will receive 2% for each year of service times the number of years employed.
30 years of work retiring at age 55 would result in 60% pension for life, for another 30+ years of retirement, using not their career average earnings but their BEST 5 years (most recent). So teachers do whatever they can to earn the max pay on the grid near retirement.
Salary today of $95,000, pension of $55,000 - $60,000 indexed for life, plus cost of living adjustments and raises annually. The pension payout alone is $1.5Million.

Teachers are disrespected because they disrespect the public - they are tone deaf, entitled, greedy, condescending, and frankly do a really shitty job of educating Ontario students on a globally ranked basis. They block and avoid change at every opportunity, from EQAO with Harris to online learning with Ford to merit based hiring practices and promotions. They promote social justice and politics in the classroom instead of teaching students how to think critically. Teachers shit all over the PCs the Libs the NDP it makes no difference which government is in power - it always about the teachers, never about the students. Whenever their union ads appear on the radio I change the channel.

Ontario has the highest pay in North America and one of the worst results - it is not just the salaries, it is the benefits, early retirement, paid sick days, indexed pensions for life.

Average Joe and Jane Parent are making half of what Trudy Teacher makes with the same or better education. Newsflash to teachers. Just because you have never left school does not make you more educated with your BA and teacher's diploma than the parents of many of your students, who work and live in the real world. They should be forced to work 5 years in the private sector before returning to the classroom.

What you get when you put hippies in charge of education.

Doug Ford promised the teachers a 20% income tax break.

The same teachers these ConservaDUMBs hate.

How's that for irony ?
