Sheik, I agree - that was some impressive work - but I'm not sure it necessarily translates to being capable of dealing with the country's problems in a successful manner. I also agree that this takes guts on her part. It's an uphill battle for her - she is going to be subjected to a great deal of negative bashing - let's see what she's made of. As you said - time will tell.

I am not so sure that it was all her in bring the conservatives together. The money behind it definetely helped.

There had to be a helluva lot of back room manouvering to get to the point of where it is now. It would be interesting to find out who the key backroom player was.

How does Peter McKay stand in all this since he allowed the merger to happen ?

We know that Joe Clarke was able to block any attempts from the two parties from merging.

We need a new perspective and we need someone that understands what a country needs, low debt, a decent armed forces and someone that can bring new business here.

I think fresh meat is the way to go this time.
Since I won't likely be voting Conserative, and it certainly would spice up the party and our political scene, I've got to agree that Belinda would be a fine choice.

But remember, it isn't a "some one" but more like the "sum" of all the people that peson surrounds themselves with that has the impact.

And IMHO these handlers (and spin doctors!!) are the one driving the agenda.

But, hell, if you've got to have someone out front it might as well be a looker (in my 50+ jaded eyes) like her.

If I remember correctly in the last two federal elections if you combined the reform and the pc votes they took well over 50 percent of the popular vote. However, the vote splitting resulted in the liberals being swept into power.
Together they totalled 37.5% Here are the results from Elections Canada. http://www.elections.ca/gen/rep/37g/table9_e.html

It wasnt the money, it was common sense that prevailed. The next federal election will tell us if we agree with it or not.
Joe Clark was burned by his ego that he won in 79 tried to run his govt like a majority, he learned that lesson quickly and never really recovered. The damage was done. However the PC party did recover and won big with Mulroney.

As for common sense, they know the numbers in the vote splitting, In key ridings liberals snuck up the middle to win.

The real test is Ontario who ever wins Ontario governs Canada, who ever wins TO and the GTA wins Ontario.

who said TO is not the center of Canada or the Center of the Universe ?

The political marketing people haven't worked on her yet. Anyone remember what Manely looked like before he became high profile?

The dude who was the Liberal Deputy Prime minister and dropped out of the Liberal leadership race against Martin. I already forgot his first name and the spelling of his last name; Manely, Manly. But he was one homely looking guy before the spin doctors got a hold of him.

Preston Manning had the makeover. hair and eye laser sugery, worked on his annoying voice trying to make less annoying.

It was too little too late for him, There was too may gaffes from homophobes from his party that damaged the reform movement and delayed any merger of conservative parties.

Money is power, power is an aphrodisiac; That is why we get these ridiculous writings about how sexy Belinda, Kim Cambell, and even Margaret Thatcher (ouch) is/was.
Whitout her money, who would be interested in Belinda?

I remember Preston stomping around Alberta hitting all the farms and cattle ranches. In the cities hitting all the right notes on Western Alienation.

Started out a small movement with one MP.

did the reform movement all start over an appointment to the senate and Albertans strongly disapproved ?

senate reform was a cry for the reform party for the longest time but there was some catalyst that sparked the movement.

So what I'm reading is that those who support her, support her based on a fresh leadership approach, and because she ran a succesful multi-national company, and would make a good national leader with international ties. Her downside is, no political experience, everyone thinks she was just handed the company reins, and there may be more behind the scenes than we know.

Ok...The behind the scenes thing...Every leader has people behind him telling him what should be said, public opinion, the direction to take, etc. I really hated when JC ran the Liberals with an iron fist, and anyone on his team that questioned him was relieved of their duties. If Belinda is open to her own party questioning her and offering the "other side's" views, plus for her (+1).

Was she really "handed" the company? Do you think daddy would just say "here you go kiddo. Take and do with as you please. Try not to fuck up" and give her the empire? I don't. If he didn't believe his daughter had the foresight to operate his business, that he grew from nothing, I don't believe he'd just say "do whatever you want and I'll watch my hard work go to shit". Another plus (+1).

No politcal experience. That's a bad thing because? Even with advisors, team players, and an agenda that gets them elected, our leaders in present and past govt's have managed to lie about what got them elected, lie even more about helping us improve our way of life, and screw us with ever increasing debt, taxes, and dependancy on foreign companies. The fact she has no experience, I think, is a plus. As long as she doesn't cave and just do what everyone else wants her to. If she sticks to her platform, listens to the people (all the time, not just during elections) I think it could show that she really does care about improving us as a Nation. I'll rank it even (0).

An international player, with ties in several countries, running a profitable company that got better after she took over, and wants to reduce debt, taxes, and gov't in my life? I'm all for it. That's plus, plus, plus, plus, plus, and plus for those keeping score (+6).

Well. From what I see so far, she's up 8 points. Instead of anymore posts stating why she should not get elected, let's hear about who could make a good competitor. Paul Martin is the leader Liberals think can take us further, but we've had 10 yrs of Liberal leadership, and though they started strong, have faultered in recent years. With JC throwing down his shit, and taking it out on anyone that questioned him and his authority (I'm talking within his own party). I don't respect someone who's ego is bigger than their head (did his dome get bigger or was it just my tv?). If Martin can show me that he's ready to help me and make this country the best it can be, what are your aspirations for Canada? I want to know how you're gonna fix things...Let's go:

My understanding, from what I've read in the Globe, is that she was the titular (I hope that is the right word) head of Magna and that many of the real decisions were made by the leaders of the various divisions of the company. Of COURSE she was handed the company in name, but again, from everything I've read, she was not responsible for any major policy decisions there.

I would like to know her opinion on what happened last year, i.e., when the Eve's govt released their last budget at the Magna Centre ... what role did she play in that decision, if any, and what would she do if and when she ever had to release a federal budget. Wasn't the Eve's budget event roundly denounced as undemocratic at the time?

If she was running Magna, as some of her fans say, then wasn't her allowing the budget to be released at the Magna Centre disrespectful of Canadians and their parliamentary traditions?

She's got Sheik's vote but...

She made her first non-news conference broadcast appearance in Winnipeg this morning on "Adler On Line". She was absolutely pathetic - hesitant and superficial. She appeared to have no in-depth knowledge on any serious issues.
Avery hit the nail on the head. From Thursday's Globe and Mail, here's another evalution of her performance on the Adler show:http://www.theglobeandmail.com/serv...R22/Columnists/Columnist?author=Roy+MacGregor

There was unflattering coverage in the National Post as well which is usually a conservative newspaper.

So far the coverage has been failrly negative, the spin doctors have their work cut out for them.
