I think Steve did an enornous effort for conservation by showing off the beauty and value of some of the least cuddly animals, particularly the poisonous ones.
And remember, that for all his theatrics, he was the consumate professional when dealing with these dangereous animals. He knew what he wsas doing and took only calculated risks. Ironic that he was killed by a pretty harmless creature.

Same thing when people keep tigers as "pets", yes they can be tamed for many years but its that one time when the animal snaps, and its bye bye animal trainer.
Maybe it didnt like the colour of his scarf who knows, but it remains a wild animal and you can never predict what they'll do
You can predict what a tiger will do about as well as you can predict what a house cat will do... but that is never 100%. The big difference is that when a misunderstanding occurs between me and a 13 lb tabby I get a scratch. When a misunderstanding occurs between a human and an 800 lb tiger it's all over.

Even nice docile "tame' herbavours like cows and horses outweigh us by 600 lbs and counting and can do a lot of damage without meaning to. People need to remember that humans are fairly small fragile critters.

Damnit.....

Why couldn't those idiots from Jackass die on the job and not Steve Irwin?

Seemed like a good man who loved his work....Brought a lot exposure to the Australian zoo and wildife....Definitely, a one of a kind of individual....
Completely agree... (don't know anything about Jackass however)...

The first thing that came to my mind (sadly) is that the chances that he took finally caught up with him... How ironic when I found out that it was a real freak accident (stingray's are very rarely deadly).... also thought the crocs or snakes would get him...

Loved his passion

I think in Africa, hippos kill more people than any other animal

I wonder if Irwin may have had a better chance if he had not pulled the barb out

I don't get it, what's the big deal?
He was happy as shit, showing off his kid.
He was extremely confident in his dealing with Crocs.
People blew that way out of proportion.
You gotta remember, he's been around Crocs (and wrangling them with his BARE hands) for a good 30+ years of his life.
I looked at it as, the guy is just very confident.
Did anything happen? No.
THE END.
So you did not have a problem when Michael Jackson dangled his kid out of a 3 story window???

Please don't confuse confidence with stupidity... Holding the kid and feeding the crocs was stupid...

I loved the guy, and loved his passion and commitment... but the kid and croc misadventure made me reconsider his sanity...

Explain please. It was my understanding that the whip action of the stingray's tail would naturally retract so that the barb created more damage going out. The damn thing penetrated his heart. He most likely died instantly.

Holy shit... I love it... I think it was the only thing that I ever sat and watched with my dad...

One of my life goals is to take my dad on a Safari somewhere in Africa...

I normally would not want to see something like this... but given that Irwin was completely a showman, I think he would have wanted it shown... I don't know why I feel this way, but it only seems "right" that he death should be aired.....

Michael Jackson, dangling a baby over a balcony for no reason? Yes.
Steve Irwin, extremely passionate professional crocodile wrangler/animal lover, 30+years experience, gauging/calculating risks his whole life, feeding crocs the way he ALWAYS has at Australia Zoo, on a daily basis? No.
Get over it.

Nothing to get over... you might need new glasses however.. I can bet that MJ picked up his kid many many times over the years and never dropped them. Similarly I can bet that Irwin received many many injuries as a result of his wrestling with wild animals that are never shown. Regardless, both were extremely stupid things to do, but its dumber to defend one and not the other....

Any animals expert will tell you that animals are unpredictable Even the ones that are raised as house pets and part of the family. Especially when they have babies or at feeding time.

I would not question Irwins capabilities in that situation, however, it's the croc that I question.

He was a dumbass and he died a well deserved cowardly death. He was gonna get it one day, he pushed everything to the extreme, well deserved.

Took me a second, and I had forgotten their famous quote..

I think that Irwin was a pretty crazy mofo... but seemed to have his heart in the right place (no pun intended)... he really seemed to love animals, gauged the risks that he took to be acceptable, and death an inevitable part of the circle of life. As such, it seems only natural that his death be shown, not as part of any need to put a show on for the audience, but as a celebration (in death) of his life. Make any sense??? Like I said, I thought he was a pretty crazy mofo... but I admired his passion, desire and commitment to his cause.
