Sometimes it's in the genes.
True, the genes that made him a hockey superstar could also be responsible for the blood clot. For example, Kris Letang was born with a hole in his heart that caused the stroke a few years ago.

P.S. The Leafs are not ready for Stamkos. They need to get a team close to Cup contention first and then a Stamkos could make them a winner.

I think the Leafs should pass on Stamkos and wait for McDavid. That will give the young guys like Nylander time to mature and be stars.

Are we sure it's genes? This is the second lightning player this season to be operated on for this same, rare condition. I think it's reasonable to speculate weather there is a common contributing factor - perhaps a side effect from something propagated by the club's "nutritionist" or "strength coach"??

DVT's( Deep Vein Thrombosis) can happen to anyone...I had one ..my S/O had one....mine was in my thigh...hers in her calf
Very painful I might add
If not too personal, what was the cause and the cure? I heard too much sitting can cause DVT.

coincidently...we had just got back from an overseas flight....14 hrs in the air...i tried to walk around the plane every so often...due to knee problems...so we figured that was the cause...blood thinners was what we were perscribed...and rest...took weeks to recover....
we both had a hard time navigating stairs...due to the pain...the S/O couldnt put any weight on her affected leg for about 2 weeks....I hobbled around with a cane for 3

Yeah, I heard the same thing. Too much sitting in a confined space. I heard that the blood clot can travel to your lungs and/or heart and kill you. Serious stuff.

Good (I think) that you and the SO didn't need surgery.

It was an option...but they wanted to try blood thinners first...
there is always the risk that the clot will break loose and travel to a critical area..heart..brain..lung....clots are serious shit and shouldnt be taken lightly

I've never heard of this being recommended, but maybe taking an aspirin a day starting a few days prior would be a reasonable preventive measure.

Yes,,,but walking around prevents the blood from pooling and coagulating....aspirin is a platelet inhibitor which prevents adhesion...ergo...no clotting...either or is a good course of preventative meassures during long flights
