Well you either 1) let them squeegee and not pay or 2) pay them and tell them not to squegee or 3) let them squeege and pay. Not making eye contact with them won't deter the act and Rubenmeister is right the goof from Markham confronting the squeegee guy outside his car is utterly stupid (i mean who needs that bull shit in the life).

What a novel idea using police to enforce the law, hopefully the Ford brothers will look into this.

We can save more cash by dropping people from welfare if they are arrested, or fail drug tests.
I wish I lived in that world...

Since I don't live in TO, is there something really wrong with the strategy of avoiding eye contact, and if they start washing your window anyway, make a show of looking for change and coming up empty, then just going through the intersection when the light's green while saying sorry?
Three things:

1) They only have a limited time and often do a shitty job.
2) They might unintentionally cause damage to your car.
3) They seem to expect compensation for something you didn't consent to buy.

If I knew I would not get charged and just have to deal with the damage to my car myself, I would definitely hit them. Hell I would run them over, and then back over them and do it again (like go do a good job). Maybe we can be allowed to hit them on our birthdays, a type of gift from the city for having to put up with them the rest of the year.
i guess rational thought is not one of your strong points

I've only seen a couple of actual squeegee kids in the last little while, but those people with cardboard signs beggging have been a menance for quite a while and I can't believe it's taken until now to start cracking down.

I frequently walk my dog in the area of a major intersection where the 2 guys "working" the corners are buddies. Every once in a while they take a well earned break together to urinate on the back walls of the adjacent buildings and drink beer openly.

I think as well as taking action against the people doing this, there should be fines for those that give them money. That would put a stop to it much faster.
whacking a guy over the head is unforgivable..and i have no liking for sqeegee kids...but moronic posts like this serve no purpose...why in gods name shuold it be illegal for a simple act of charity..if i want to give someone a loonie or toonie..this idiot would have me fined?...hey dickweed ever heard of free will?

Lots of bylaws already exist to dissuade people from doing things they think is charitable or acceptable, but which in fact is more harmful (or more a nuisance) to society at large. Advocating a fine for people who feed the squeegie kids does not make on a dickweed.

We reached the point a few years ago where you can't walk anywhere in the downtown core without being repeatedly asked for money (and that includes the Sick Kids and Red Cross canvassers). A tourist (Hammond?) was actually stabbed to death by a beggar.

For a panhandler that walks by my car, I don't make eye contact or pump up the volume and sing to the music in my little world.

For a squeegee kid, if they approach, I usually give them a stern look and say 'No thank you, I don't need it'. Sometimes I turn on my windshield washer/wiper.

Once, a guy said "I'll wash your car window anyway but you don't have to pay" to my waving head, so I didn't pay and drove off. No problem.

OMG.. they are usually harmless.. a dude got struck.. does it say anything about what he did? NO I amsure he got out of his car to go hug the fellow and was all nice and polite.. two wrongs do not make a right..
at least these kids are actually working for whatever pennies they get.. not out robbing and beating people and stealing their money.. that could be a reason they are not high on the cops proirity list... fine them? they dont make anymoney.. take away the right to do this then yeah I bet the crime will go up just a bit.. you do not know how or why they are doing what they are doing.. maybe you could try treating them like humans and talk to them.. there is nothing saying you cant or you should not..
that is MHO
Actually intimidating people into giving you money is a form of robbery. I live/work near Spadina and Front and Spadina and Queen. These guys specifically target cars with women and or Asians because they can intimidate these people easier. They are usually startled (the pros) sneak up to your car from an odd angle so that they spook the driver who then feels "scared" and pays. Do you think these guys don't have/make money? I've actually sat at one of these intersections and figured out they they are making between $20-$30 and hour tax free. I've also watched these "kids" go into a Kensington market store to exchange their loonies for bills. One girl exchanged $180 worth of loonies and twoonies with a vendor. She said she can provide more in two days so that the vendor didn't have to go to the bank for it. Over the years I've seen them urinate into the bottles they use to wash windshields, seen drivers mirrors scratched and watched helplessly as they walked away, traffic flow impeded at the height of rush hour because they wouldn't move. They are pests, albeit pests who have nice boots, plenty of smokes, and a pretty easy lifestyle. Sorry get your sympathy elsewhere, we're all sold out.

Each time a squeech guy/girl approached my car I smiled apologetically and said so sorry I'd like to help out but I never carry cash. Each time they politely said thanx anyway(or something to that effect)and walked away.

You called me a moron, and idiot and a dickweed in your reply. Is that how you typically debate? You need to look in the mirror.

They are already breaking the law by being on the road. Giving them money will only encourage them. It's like when you go to parks and there are signing saying not to feed the birds.
Trafalgar square used to have lots of pigeons. Feeding them was outlawed and guess what, no more pigeons.

I can't fathom how that isn't obvious.

I don't like the whole squeegee situation because it goes aginst the grain of capitalism i.e. you seek out a service and someone provides it to you in exchange for money.

Squeegee kids provide a service that most of the time you don't want and don't solicit and then expect you to compensate them?

It makes no sense whatsoever.

Ironic that nearly HALF of everyones money gets stolen in a similar manner... The main difference everybody KNOW squeegee kids are pieces of shit & arent entitled to it.... Amazing that the other group of thieves write on paper that they can do so & evryone goes along with it.....

Twotinytestes doesn't debate.... he posts his worthless ill informed opiniion & blindly/stupidly attacks when any response other than TOTAL agreement is offered him....

Just another clueless Ivory Tower pushing unconditional tolerance faggotry while at the same time being intolerant of anything else....

Nice, well reasoned argument. I don't agree with discouraging acts of charity but it has been reported that it is a concept that is getting traction in some major cities:

www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/02/03/national/main2429393_page2.shtml?tag=contentMain;contentBody

Again, I don't agree with the idea and am happy that US courts, to date, appear reluctant to allow such laws to stand, but there is certainly evidence that a number of city beaurocrats and elected officials share Tangwhich's line of thinking. And to clarify, most laws infringe on "free will" to some extent so "free will" is hardly a convincing response.

Poor people suck. Through unfortunate circumstances we can all end up down and out at times in our life. Sadly, that doesn't change the fact that poor people suck.

What he did was stupid but perhaps he is the martyr for change to the laws dealing with squeegee kids.

From todays' Toronto Sun ....How stupid does this guy look now?

"Townsend alleged he tried to exit his car to confront the squeegee kid, but the man repeatedly “hip-checked” his car door to prevent him from getting out.

He finally managed to force his car door open.

“I was only part way out and this guy started wailing on me, hitting me in the neck and back with his squeegee,” Townsend alleged.

When he finally was able to fully exit his car, Townsend said he looked up and saw the man swinging his squeegee full force at his head.

“I deked out the first one and managed to punch him once, but then he hit me several times on top of my head,” Townsend alleged, adding doctors suspect he was hit with the sharp edge of the squeegee."

Honking your horn just makes YOU look like an asshole to the hundred other people who you now are pissing off.

I'd say that YOU need to have a look at your own intelligence if you allow your tough guy hero emotion to do anything to escalate a conflict with a homeless stranger with nothing to lose. Look what happened to this tough guy above^^^

Do you REALLY think that your horn honking mades even one little bit of positive difference?
