A song on his new album contains the following lyric: "Two hundred dollars straight in, two-fifty up the ass." Nice to see that even The Boss has to pay for extras!

I read the lyrics to that song in another thread on this site and couldn`t believe it. Then again some of his past songs could be construed that way, albeit more subtlely. Remember Darlington county?

Hey little girl, standing on the corner
Today`s your lucky day for sure, alright
Me and my buddy we`re from New York City
We`ve got two hundred dollars, we wanna rock all night

bruce is NOT a hobbyist

As a huge Springsteen fanatic for 25+ years I take offense to that comment that he is a hobbyist, his songs are of the common man and everyday life, and as we all know being a hobbyist is 1 part of the common man's life.
The song itself(Reno) isn't that graphic really, that line is the only controversial 1 in the whole album/cd(Devils & Dust)

How do you know he's not a hobbyist? It's not like he's gonna broadcast it to everyone that he is. He's a pop/rock star and I bet it is more likely than not that most pop/rock stars have seen SP's.

Also why would you take offense to it that he is might be a hobbyist? If you think being a hobbyist is an insult then you are in the wrong board.

Never the safest place
He can write a song about it without having experience himself. Since it's illegal in the U.S., I don't think he would admit it even if he really did. Is he still married to the redhead in his band?

It's a way of avoiding gold diggers and law suits for many celebrities and pro athletes. Colin Farrell said it was like ordering pizza.

I don't know if the Boss is a hobbyist, but I wouldn't care either way. Plenty of celebrities hobby, and why the hell not? They have the money, so why not? There are a lot of advantages to hobbying, and I have often thought that if more men knew how easy and fun hobbying was, the question would be why not do it. IMO, hobbyists are just a little more resourceful and clever than non-hobbyists.

Besides what Alien and subDave have written on the board, this may be one of the goofiest things ever. First, if you think that anybody is above being an hobbyist, then you should take a look in the mirror. Second, maybe he is, but who cares? Why would that make him less of a person? And why would you take such offence to him being a hobbyist? And lastly, how do you know he isn't a hobbyist? I mean, his songs are meant for the common man by the common man. Why would that preclude that he didn't hobby?

This thread is an excellent example of how even the most innocuous post eventually descends into nonsense. You've gotta love TERB!

I wonder if Paul Simon still checks out the streetwalkers?

Asking only workmans wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there
La la la la la...

I don't think even Paul Simon would have to pay for sex, let alone the Boss. What percentage of attractive women at a Springstein concert would not happily be picked out of the crowd and taken back to service him?

The age old adage "You don't pay her for sex, you pay her to leave" holds true here. They want sex with no strings attached.

And if you still have a hard time believing that famous guys would can get any chick they want and are married to hot women would pay for sex.... I give you two words........... Hugh Grant

Has it been that long?

I remember seeing him 30 years ago at Seneca College just after Born To Run came out, one of my fondest memories as a teenager. :)

It's already been said, but paying for it does not mean you are necessarily unattractive or unworthy. With the amount that I hobby, I have to believe that! :p

Well, whether Springsteen or any of his ilk are or have been, technically speaking, active hobbyists or not is immaterial. It doesn't take much imagination to take any rock'n'roll ode to groupies or just plain "girls" and transpose them to SP subject matter--and when one thinks of it, aside from the money part, in practice (and sympathetically speaking), how different are most groupies from SPs?

Viewed in this light, Brooce might just as well be the ultimate metaphor for the hobbyist with a heart of gold--and "Born To Run" thus becomes an allegory for one barn-burner of a TERB review. And I'm sure a lot of the SPs hanging here would love to have that kind of customer. Yadig?

I was not implying that if you pay you must be undesirable, just that being hugely famous and successful is very powerful when it comes to getting women on your own terms (e.g. go away after). It is true about Hugh Grant, though I think that rock stars tend to be a lot better organized at processing groupies than movie stars do.

Understood. But rock stars, athletes, movie stars (at least the ones that are male and straight), all have their down moments, I'm sure, and what if they desire some female company at that moment ? Men hobby for many reasons, but the most important reason is because they can. I would suggest celebrities are no different.
