It's the 21st century, is time for sport teams to change their racists nicknames and team logos?

I personally think the Indians logo is racists and offensive towards native Indians.

The Red skins as well.

The Blackhawks to some extent but the logo is rather nice and Chicago Black Hawks have the best looking Jersey in the NHL, so maybe it's not such a hot topic.

I am not native but when I think or Redskins or Indians I just think of a baseball team and football team ... Do we think about birds when we say Toronto Blue Jays or do we think of Dinosaurs when we are cheering for the Raptors ? When you use the term Redskings for as long as the NFL has used it , then to most to all your just referring to an NFL team when your hearing this word ... Now with working with the NFL and MLB maybe just
get artists that can portray the Indian in less of a insuilting way

To me when Cleveland was naming it's team they weren't calling the team to denigrate a race but to Honour it ..

Isn't there more pressing needs in the world and in the U.S to be worried about sports franchise names ... Heck when I think back on how the Bullets changed their name
to Wizards and for what ... It hasn't effected any change the U.S views guns ...

Heck, why not the Queens Jew Boys baseball team, The San Francisco Chinamen? I only think of baseball teams???

A cartoon of a red faced smiling Indian with a feather band to honour Indians? Let's ask a few native Indians what they think...

Judging by your comments you sure aren't native. Many natives thinks it's offensive, these logos/nicknames does them no honour. What we have here is lack of education and many years of ignorance about native Indians. We are in the 21st century, society and the human race still has a long way to go it seems.

Many colleges have changed their names. I believe the Florida State Seminoles, have a lot of support in the Seminole community, to keep the name. Just like the Fighting Irish, I guess it brings pride to the Seminole community. The Redskin name probably needs to go, and if the Cleveland still uses Chief Wahoo, that needs to go as well.

Yep, totes racist.

Toooooooootes racist.

Offensive to me that people can see it and think, "nah, that's totally cool. Its cool that your culture is my mascot bro. It's like we're honouring you, like we honour our knickerbockers, and our Rough Riders."

What the fuck? Your culture (that has been under constant attack for 400 years) = a baseball team?

We should be more worried about Kim Jong Un and his ambition to unite the Koreas under his rule by any means.

I don't believe there is much support for the name Seminoles, Andrew Jackson culled their population by over half. I least they weren't entirely exterminated like the Comanche. Does any sports franchise use that name, it probably would be the most insulting to Native Americans.

They have the Seminoles blessing, and I think contribute to the tribe as well.

I read something in a newspaper the other day that a study/poll that it recognized even by native scholars as accurate had the following findings....

That 1% had no opinion on the Redskins Team.
That 9% found the name offensive
That 90% said they could keep the name and they were good with it.

Interesting. As always I think people do take some things too seriously.

What these teams should do is some good funding to native groups. That usually solves problems.

I disagree, keep the logos and names, as I don't see any racist intent in this day and age, other than a few people who interpret these as being so.

I would however agree that the Cleveland Indians need to update their logo to a more dignified depiction of a majestic North American Indian, like the Blackhawks logo.

When the team name issue has been settled, it is high time to focus on eliminating the keeping of scores in major league sports.

All games should end in ties and handshakes to represent a fun time for all.

There is no need to portray a group of players as "losers". This sends a negative message to the children. We do not need to compete, we need to cooperate.

All sports should adopt the phrase "Everyone is a Winner".

There would be a crowd on the other side of the pendulum calling it offensive to remove the logos...It's a lose lose situation.

How come nobody is offended by New York Yankees?

Or for that matter... Why is nobody offended by name Montreal Canadiens? Most people probably don't know this because it is in french but Canadiens means Canadians!!!! What is up with their racist mascot Yuppi??? What kind of depiction of Canadian people is that!?
