All is well on the parent front. Mom is actually kind of interested and even admitted to being proud of me. Dad hasn't brought it up but is treating me exactly the same as always (excellently).

I spent the morning in the ER on Monday, and it turns out I've got a spinal disc herniation in my back! It really hurts. They've got me on percocet, which isn't terrible I suppose :eyebrows:

I know this kind of thing is pretty common...does anyone have any advice for me? I'm particularly interested in staying active without aggravating it. I was on a roll with getting in shape and stuff, and now this has kind of put a damper on things.

Thanks a lot, lovely folks!

Glad to hear about progress on the home front, Miss Noélle.

Terribly sorry about the setback on the health side.

Wish you a speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear you may be laid up a bit. Rest is best for a little while, to let the inflamation subside. You don't want to aggravate it. But go easy on the Percocet, many people have become addicted to it. Only take it if you have to, to ease the pain - but I know you are a very inteeligent girl and will have done your research.
Hope you're back in the saddle soon!

well, that is good that all is cool...

as for the herniation, that is why I had to give up bodybuilding...
there is one particular exercise you must do while laying down to strengthen the lower back, and another move to realy strech out the lumbar to release tension.

lay on back and basically feel like your trying to pee but hold it for a ew seconds...do this for about 50 reps, 3 sets. this will fire up the muscles in the lower back and help alot...
next get on your hands and knees (yes doggystyle) and then out your head to the floor bring chest into your knees..with hands spread as far forward as possible. basically do a lazy pushup but instead of up and down, your are rolling forward, slightly lunging, dipping into the ground, then up are far as your cehst will alow arching your back...do this 10-15 times, you will crack and pop alot, this will release the muscles and lumbar in the lower region.

stay away from percs. ask your doctor for tramacet at most. do not just lay there...this will cause great pain later on...use it or lose it motto! donot use heat either.

I have six mild herniations 2 in cervical spine 4 in thoracic spine, a bulge at l5-s1, smorls nodes at T5-T7 and spinal cord impingments at 4 levels (from motorcycle acident). My ribs flare up at multiple levels with excercise as well as probelms with my connective tissue. Also, had shoulder surgery over 10 years ago and problems with my left bicep tendon. Legs are fine though (knock on wood). I don't use any narcotics but am in the process of attaining a medical marijuana license. Pot helps with inflammation. I see an Oesteopath and/or high level chiropratcor weekly depending on whats going on and massage once a month.

Light excercise, diet, stretching (myofascial strecthes), drink lots of water and rest. Check out these therapists or anyone trained under them working in your area.

I also had a disc herniation between L5 and S1. I found a pilates DVD called "Be Kind to Your Spine" and it helped a ton. The key is that you need to strengthen your core muscles to help keep your spine in alignment. I also recommend avoiding chiropractors. Although they can give you temporary relief, they will actually make it worse in the long run. If you do exercise and take care of it though, it doesn't have to hamper you. I got back to playing hockey in no time. Best wishes with your recovery.

Gonna be doing some biking, swimming, hiking over next few days and putting my body to the test!

Inversion table worked for me and 2 other friends. I had one surgeon book me for surgery but before i would let him cut me open, I continued with using my inversion table, the 2nd surgeon admitted that after surgery people are as good as what i had gotten myself back too.
