Some dude is claiming he's part of an unheard of indigenous group demanding a huge chunk of land from lake Ontario up to Minden and exemption from Canada's laws and taxes while at the same time running a "Redneck Church" and flying confederate flags.

He also claims to have records documenting his ancestors 30,000 year history in the area even though there's no evidence humans were there at the time. Can't wait to see what notarized documents he has from the Kawarthas in the year 28,000 BCE.

So he's a zionist?

Can't you have a normal conversation or allow others to have one without your rude intrusions over your obsession?

This place (TERB) is becoming even more deranged and politically obsessive.

And besides, you are making an outright racist, anti-semetic comment. Peterborough has nothing to do with Israel.

Why do you think basketcase posted this in the first place?
As an attack on movements against settler colonialism.

Besides, schlong, its antisemitic to conflate zionism with the Jewish people.
That's an antisemitic trope.

Makes as much sense as recognizing hockey games that are held upon "the traditional lands" of some indigenous group or another, or travelling herd of moose, or whatever.

I wonder if he has any more proof of nationhood than these other wacky groups?

Unlike you, I'm not so arrogant to assert motivation to others. In this other post in which I posted a funny to your post by Oracle, you thought I was insulting you.

And also unlike you, I actually read the links, not just SPAM TERB with links. If you actually read the story, you'd know better than to ascribe a completely fictional motive.

If I were to guess why... it's more about how these flat/earther sovereign citizen whackos are now claiming to be indigenous to Canada making the news in Great Britain.

No it's not anti-semetic to "conflate zionism with the Jewish people". What a STUPID thing to say. Not as stupid as conflating Palestine with Peterborough though 🤔

Zionism IS a movement by Jewish people to establish a homeland for the Jewish people, particularly in Palestine.

That's P-A-L-E-S-T-I-N-E. Not P-E-T-E-R-B-O-R-O-U-GH

You can re-post a statement by an organization called Independent Jewish Voices expressing their anti-zionist position but that is their specific, narrow view, (And I don't disagree with their view either.)

Perhaps you can invite the IJV to appear at the next Peterborough City Council meeting?

Here's the key phrase in that article:
The far-right strategy of using Indigenous identity to claim a right to lands has concerned researchers, who see the move as a threat to legitimate Indigenous groups.

Basketcase and I have been trading barbs for quite some time over Palestine. He takes great offence to Palestinians being called indigenous and pointing out that zionism was a foreign colonial movement. This thread is a continuation of that concept. Typically basketcase posts on every Palestine thread, starts threads demonizing Iran and occasionally something like this.

I did apologize for the ass in head reply, I was skimming through that thread quickly and did think that it was oracle who posted that meme, not you. Again, my apologies.

Yes it is antisemitic to conflate zionism with the Jewish people. Zionism is a movement supported by some Jewish people and in NA by way more evangelical christians who think it will help bring about armeggedon. Its wrong and antisemitic to say all Jews are zionists any more than saying all americans are racist MAGA types.

Zionism IS a movement by Jewish people to establish a homeland for the Jewish people, particularly in Palestine.

Yes, zionism is a 19th century, racist, colonial settler movement whereby a group of people declare they have holy real estate title to another country.

You should check out a Palestine march some day, there is a big Jewish presence that always brings signs and are always welcomed.
Independent Jewish Voices are always there, that's a great Jewish organization with some smart and good people.

This was never about Peterborough.

Yes, your post was never about Peterborough.

But your admission that you were "just skimming" through posts and didnt even recognize that it was me who posted something in support of you shows that you really don't want to listen or consider the viewpoints and opinions of others. Before taking 5x the time to prepare a strongly opinionated reply to something you didn't even take the time to consider, least of all comprehend.

Just like your reply above.

That rant being a further demonstration of your Rudy Buttinski rude lack of manners and consideration of others conversations.

I want to address this specific point. I agree Israel, Palestine, Zionism and Anti-Zionism have nothing to do with what is presented in this thread, even though I myself have doubts on basketcase's motive, similar to his other thread on Sudan where he eventually brought in Israel and basically asked why we were so concerned about violence in Gaza but not in Sudan, even though one does not have to do with the other.

But I will respond to this specific point with Benjamin Moser, a Pulitzer prize winning author's note. Won't respond further though because that would derail the thread. But in general, speech against a nationalist movement, which is Zionism is not hate speech.

I can't access that link and am not going to participate in further derailing this discussion anyways. Let frankfooter have the last whine.

I think that's unfair, schlong.
I skim through memes and troll type replies but give detailed replies to those that merit them.

This thread is not about Peterborough, its about basketcase finding an article that attacks the anti settler colonialist movement.
I took care and time to reply to your posts in the Palestine threads but you were too offended to take the time to consider them yourself.
This is a very polemic issue, its been ongoing for far longer than 7 months.

Calling out basketcase here is related to calling him out for his support of what is an incredibly racist and horrific regime.
We both call out the same thing, foreign colonialism, illegal occupation and attacks on the people who live there.
Just the Israel one has been ongoing for 75 years and coming to its likely end soon.

''At the centre of the lot, near signs for the “Redneck Church” and “Chief Willy’s Man Cave” stands a 26ft tipi. Alongside banners commemorating missing and murdered Indigenous women and the victims of Canada’s residential school system, Confederate flags flap gently in the wind.''

This is just someone who is throwing a lot of sh#t on the wall to see what sticks.

Of course The Guardian will tie in far right extremism and link it to conservative movements because well that's what they do.

Sorry about that. You explained it well and helped me continue to figure things out. I started a reply but then somehow lost it when I had a Zoom call and switched browsers. I will look at it again over the weekend. Some days and weeks I have all day to pop in and out of TERB while and between work. Other times I am not near a real computer or am geoblocked.

I'm sorry not to have responded to the well mannered, well reasoned message you wrote in that thread.

And it is mostly due to one poster. Frank.

All he does is disrupt, disturb and cause discord on the board. His presence does nothing to enhance TERB. His hate speech grows more and more vile and becomes more pervasive. He's been banned several times under different handles. What could he have possibly previously posted to get him banned that is more disturbingly racist than what he is currently spewing?

Why is he even here? He serves the board no good. More and more posters get more and more disturbed by him and are calling him out.

You mean other than commenting on idiotic political behaviour in the country where I live? I spend a fair bit of time in the Peterborough and Kawartha area but you only view the world through perceived Jewishness.

Your view is that I shouldn't post about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict because you claim I'm an anti-Muslim racist. You claim I shouldn't post about human rights abuses in Iran because that makes me a war monger. Now you're saying I can't post about local news because you think it's somehow about Israel.

Holy shit bro, you need some serious help.

Interesting. Someone who has posted truly nationalist views is now saying its okay for people just to ignore the laws of their nation?

And yes, we have hundreds of years of treaties where Canada and the Brits acknowledge forcing groups of people off the land they were living on.

Another person unable to believe people can have an interest in local politics and instead assigns a wider motive. It's almost like you and your little buddy have a belief that a certain group of people are involved in a nefarious plot.
