Going in to uncharted land, raping and pillaging the continent by enslaving the people, tearing apart entire regional cultures, alliances and trading partners and then abandoning it afterward - only to continue to do so from afar (along with other emerging powers like Russia, China, the US, etc.) by using things like propped-up dictators, multinational corporations, the World Bank and the IMF to do their bidding.

Then why is it that areas of Africa with far longer histories of European commercial exploitation or colonization have vastly healthier political and economic situations? Both the British and the Italians arrived in Somaliland only in the 1880's - quite late in the game
