Funny, because I'd actually argue there's too much empathy in some regards and not enough personal responsibility. While safe injection sites and de facto decriminalizing drugs helps prevent overdose deaths in the near-term, it's also enabling and proliferating drug addiction. Being soft on petty theft because we're assuming the thieves are desperate, causes businesses to move away and economic stagnation for the neighborhood. Providing tents for the homeless makes what should be a temporary living situation a permanent one, and draws more homeless to the area.

For all these societal issues, the proper approach should be to provide an escape route, while making the undesired behaviour difficult. Not everyone will take that escape route, but that's where personal responsibility comes in.

What we're seeing right now is the effect of taking personal responsibility away. All these undesirable behaviours proliferate in the name of empathy.
I agree on the homelessness issue. Petty theft?.... How many businesses are actually moving away due to petty theft?

And the petty theft policy in Toronto is that the culprit is allowed one "diversion" - i.e. go to a "don't shoplift" seminar and the charges are dropped; but the next time, the culprit is fully prosecuted and convicted.

Society is not breaking down, it is broken! I live in the US and travel to Canada frequently, both countries are a mess. To be clear, I am more conservative than liberal, I believe in guns and rockin roll. I think crime should have consequences, not excuses. Race, religion, straight or gay, should not matter, law and order should, black, white, green or blue. However politicians spin the facts and create controversy. Joe Biden and Justin Trudeau are self serving and feed off of stupid people
So this is the end of times right? John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth thought so in their day. Jim Jones and David Koresch more recently. Let us know when to sell all our earthly goods...

Like I just said on another thread. This is the end result of boys being raised without a father figure at home or in their life.
There are no longer even pedo priests to fall back on...

Worst is sometimes it's not because father left. It's because he is running 2 jobs to make ends meet...

This is what happens when leaders are weak. Lori Lightweight created this monstrosity.

And why did that happen? Society moved jobs away from black men, making them a non-factor to the family structure.

You can't address one issue without the other.

I won't even go into the brainwashing the media does to black children. That is it's own thread.

Yeah, it's all about balance. But there's nothing about empathy that says we don't hold people responsible. Empathy at it's core is about understanding people come from different places in their lives to be where they are. We don't have to like it or accept it, it's just understanding people can be different. And there is an absolutely responsibility to do what you're able to fix those behaviours which are problematic. Assuming, of course, you're able to have the ability to do it.

One thing that comes to mind as I read what you've written is what I think is societal inability to deal with root causes. Homelessness doesn't go away because we remove a tent city, theft doesn't go away because we incarcerate people. Unless we fix the root cause of problems, no problem will ever go away. An example are mass shootings. Yeah, okay, so take the guns away but that doesn't take away the person who fires the gun, it doesn't remove the urge to kill, to do violence, to glorify yourself through violence. Unless we address that stuff, then you still have the problem.

Maybe. Yet what is your solution? Most people are fucking poor and barely make ends meet. This leads to all the violence we are seeing.
But what leads to poverty? Unless we solve that issue then we'll still have violence.

Mobs of Cacklers on the loose.

Late last year, 8 black teenage girls swarmed and killed a man in downtown Toronto apparently over a bottle of liquor. 3 of the girls were 13, 3 were 14 and 2 were 16. Underlying cause: lack of parental supervision - same as in Chicago. When the girls were arraigned, only 2 mothers showed up. Not a single one of their fathers showed up for the arraignment:(

Almost 70% of black children in the US are born to single mothers. It's hard enough for two-parent families to raise children. A child born to a single mother doesnt stand a chance, which is why poverty, crime and dysfunctional behaviour have become endemic among blacks.

Children holed up in their homes unable to enjoy simple pleasure of playing outside for fear of being shot. They live in perpetual fear unable to burn energy. The condition of millions of black children in the US and Canada is worse than the poorest in other parts of the world. The liberals do nothing and conservatives only criticize. God help us all.
