Should you be concerned if your cat kills a huge rat?

I know a woman that lives 10 minutes from the city. There are a lot of wooded areas, so there are rats and mice in the fields. Her cat recently did battle with a large rat. the body was 10 inches long. The cat did kill the rat and drag it back to the garden, but not before taking a few bites to the body. There is no way to know if this was a sewer rat or a field rat. Should she be concerned for her cats health?

Most cats can catch mice and birds and not get sick, however some mice have worms and so the cat should already be dewormed. Rats in particular can carry a disease called leptospirosis. which can be very harmful and contagious from rats to cats to humans so if your friend notices the cat getting a fever, becomes lethargic, develops a swollen area, or stops eating, let the vet know.

The cat should be okay but it is possible to get ill from eating rodents.

That's the part of universal game the Cat Kills the Rat, but i have even seen that our domestic Cats are sometimes afraid of Big Rats, so better protect your Sweetie from Big Rowdy Rats:)

What's wrong with having an obsession with a cat? They are the most intelligent 'pet' a human can get and they are independent.

OP: Yes you should be concerned, you should go to the vet and get the regular check up and rabies shot just to be safe. Regardless if it was a sewer rat or not, those rats eat anything so you should get it checked out or your friend or whoever.

Wow! A rat that big would usually win against a cat. That pussy is one tough motherf**ker. Tell the lady she should be happy that thing is guarding her home.

Sounds more like a small gopher too me.

We have large black tree squirrels (?) around here that could pass as rats at a glance. That RAT sounds pretty big.

I did not see it myself but I think it was a rat, and not a black squirel or a gopher. It was dead and her niece stepped on it barefoot. I have actually seen one slightly bigger than than that with a 12 to 14 in. body. The thick part of the tail was about the diameter of a nickel. Total length from nose to tail about 24 inches.

Strong threat of rabies. Cat should be examined and quarantined
Very, very rare for rodents to carry rabies. High risk are raccoons and bats.

I wouldn't worry about it. Any cat that kills a rat, has killed lots of other game too. The risks are the same.

That said, I would definitely make sure the cat is completely up to date with all her shots, on an on-going basis. You have no idea what that cat is bringing back home to you!

I'd be more concerned if the cat started to date the rat. Interspecies relationships rarely end well. :D
