Canada, Colombia and Mexico have so far made bids to host the 2026 world cup. Note that Canada is the only G8 country not to host the World Cup. Europe, Asia cannot host according to FIFA rules. Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver, Calgary, Regina and Winnipeg are considered host cities. Montreal Olympic stadium is the largest but needs grass. Toronto Rogers Center has 53,000+ seats but needs grass. BMO Field is grass but need to expand to at least 40K seats. Edmonton Commonwealth stadium has 56K seats but needs grass. Vancouver BC place has 54K seats but needs grass. Calgary has 35K seats, needs 10K more seats and grass. Regina has 33K seat stadium, needs another 10K seats and grass and same with Winnipeg. Also, if CAnada gets the World Cup you can bet that Toronto will get the Summer Olympics down the line (sometime in the 2030s).

The cost of retrofitting some stadiums is peanuts compared to costs of an Olympics.

Voted no. I would love to see it but have zero confidence in our politicians ability to bring it in on a reasonable budget.

I dont think every stadium needs to be expanded to 45k or more. There were a few stadiums in Brazil in the 30-35k range. Most of the new CFL fields are built with the ability to be expanded with temporary seating for Grey Cup hosting, so the same could be done for World Cup games. But that brings to mind the other issue here. All these places are CFL stadiums and the World Cup generally happens during the first part of the CFL season. Not sure how you balance that conflict. I also think that in the next 12 years, Regina for sure and probably Calgary, and perhaps Edmonton, would be looking at new stadiums anyway, and as for Montreal, I think they would look at expanding the current MLS stadium before doing anything with the Big Owe.

Why not have it in small existing stadiums with less than 10,000 people? 99% of the audience watches it on television anyway.

There is so much concrete stress in The Big Owe that Montreal is better of detonating the place, the cost of maintenance is killing the city's budget.

Canada is considered a joke by FIFA, it's never going to happen. Unless we start developing more players they wont even look at our bid.

Comparing the World Cup to the Women's World Cup is like comparing Real Madrid to a high school team. As for the bid I cant take it seriously since there isnt enough of the infrastructure in stadiums to pull it off, and with the huge joke that the 2022 event being hosted in Qatar is turning out to be, I cant see FIFA awarding this to Canada. Now a shared bid with the US where some matches take place in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver is a much better idea, but dont think the Yanks would go for that since they can do it alone.

no... i am a huge football fan...but hell no ...only exception would be if we shared hosting duties with the USA...and included only Montreal and Toronto...in fact they should only allow it to be in one time zone..so my version would be..Toronto, NYC, Philidelphia, Boston, DC ,Montreal , Miami , Pittsburgh , Detroit

This idea should be kicked around before a decision is made.
Not sure if you realized it but that's kinda funny considering that we're talking about soccer which has lots of kicking.

Women's world cup is not the best in the world. It's the best women in the world. Huge huge difference in quality of play.

It could work and would result in a massive change in soccer in our country. It would be the kick starter for a whole new generation of players who would most likely lead Canada to reoccurring world cup appearances. Only issue I have is what do we do with the stadiums after the tournament is done ? Don't want to see South Africa all over again. Also, no way would the US share the duties it makes 0 sense they have the full ability to host it themselves. Lastly, do we really want to host a world cup and get smoked, first I believe Canada needs to prove itself and make the world cup on its own. When we hosted the 2007 u-20 world cup it was a disaster for the mens team, I want to see Canada atleast leave the group if we host.

The US is considering sharing hosting with Mexico. Canada did qualify in 1986 even though they did not get smoked, they lost all 3 games and did not score a goal. 12 years from now who knows perhaps Canada will be better. With TFC, Montreal and Vancouver in the MLS they are developing home grown talent.

The NHL could hold outdoor hockey games all season long.

Rogers Centre is already scheduled to install grass by 2017. Beeston thinks it will help jays acquire free agents and cut down on injuries to the team.

Not a soccer fan. I believe a world cup here would do for the sport of soccer what the Raptors have done for Cdn. basketball. This would be great boost for tourism. It would upgrade a number of stadiums in the country and possibly be cause for building a new one or two. On the downside, what would be the cost to the average taxpayer? The overall cost may out weigh the benefits.

3 losses, with 0 goals for and 5(1986) against would be a pretty bad showing if we were hosting. And other countries have only gotten better. I have hope Canada will qualify in 2022, Benito Floro is playing all the young guys and even though we haven't won a game in almost two years its alright, were facing some pretty decent European teams every friendly fixture list, and he's playing all young guys who are developing a strong team chemistry together. I'm hoping for a strong showing at the upcoming Gold Cup next year, it will show how far Floro has brought Canada since that 7-1 loss to Houndorus.
