I don’t do it all the time, but I will occasionally add a package of taco seasoning while browning the ground venison.
The good news is shepherds pie is a great way to turn some life back into some leftovers...almost any kind of meat, be it a pot roast or ground meat (break/chop up the roast), fry up w onion and a bit o' garlic, pop on some gravy, some corn or peas might help, layer of mash and you're good to go. Adding a cheddar or even Asiago into the mash - like the "twice baked" potato type filling - also adds joy to the dish.
I've never tried making Shepherd's Pie at home. The best way to make mashed potatoes is with a food mill but it takes up lots of space.

The reason Sheppards Pie is also called Pate Chinois is because the cowboys out on the range and railway workers that built the railroad often had Chinese cooks. When the meals were cooked and taken out to where the workers/cowboys were working it was easier to throw one food on top of the other to transport it.

I had the smoked meat at Dunn's, very tasty with dollops of horse radish. Will try the Shepherd's Pie when I'm back in Montreal.

So I made two sheppard's pies a few weeks back following this recipe. The they turned out pretty good.
Lamb makes it a true Sheperd's pie. Regular ground beef should be called Cottage pie
That said in Quebec we call it... Chinese pie haha! Don't ask me where the name comes from as it has nothing to do with China!
