SACRAMENTO — Two days before he was sworn into office, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger accepted a consulting job paying an estimated $8 million over five years to "further the business objectives" of a national publisher of health and bodybuilding magazines.

The contract pays Schwarzenegger 1% of the magazines' advertising revenue, much of which comes from makers of nutritional supplements. Last year, the governor vetoed legislation that would have imposed government regulations on the supplement industry.

I guess the fact that Clai is the mussle head capitol of the world had nothing to do with any decisions made. I would venture to say that were a vote put to the people the bills would have been defeated. Government was not meant to provide guidence or protect the people from every posible harm. While I am no fan of suppliments as you describe I have to support the fact GOVERNMENT is not here to protect us from ourselfs. Soda pop is dangerous to many would you support a law banning it cause some dimnwitt might use and die?

Whoa, you're splitting some pretty fine hairs there with that argument. Government does regulate things like mussel's (the bivalve's one eats) as opposed to muscles (the things Cali is supposedly the capital of), speed limits, cigarette smoking, marijuanna etc etc...

Suppliments are certainly within the realm of something a federal or state government is allowed to wiegh in on especially if one is able to find a demonstratable heath risk with their usage..

But more to the point. It is a clear conflict of interest for Arnold to be in the employ of a manufacter when he is an elected official and for that he should pay a penalty of some sort. I'm not sure I'd hang him or anything but it is nice to see a strike against him in a three strike state.

I think we can all agree that Arnie has/had lots of business interest before running for office. He is worth something like 300 million dollars. You are implying that there was no other good reason to veto that bill other than to try and make some extra coin on one deal? Do you even know what the proposed bill says and what reasons were given to veto it? Doesnt make much sense in terms of his overall business empire and goals in office to risk it all on a measly supplement income cut. I am sure there are many other bills/proposals which hinder his money-making abilities in some way which weren't vetoed but there were no stories written about those bills were they?

Conflicts of interest can arise in other situations other than straight veto rights. The CLintons had their hands in a lot (especially Bill as we all know) during those years.

Apparently there were two bills put forth by Sen. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, one of which Arnie passed into law! Unlike the Dems, who oppsed every republican measure no matter what it says out of spite.

The bill Arnie passed bans the sale of ephedra dietary supplements to people under age 18. HOw does that help Arnie's pocketbook, TOVisitor?

The reasons stated for the vetoing of the second bill was apparently for lack of clarifty on the definition of what was being regulated. Here is an article about the two Democratic Bills, one of which Arnie passed.

I somehow think this will affect Arnie's ratings in the least. The focus down there seems to be the November polls where Arnie is letting the people have a direct say on certain measures...something the Dems are opposing (I guess they dont like letting the voters decide things between elections, huh?)

Also, Arnie gets paid a minimum of $1M apparently no matter what, even if the magazine doesnt sell anymore supplement ads.
