the exorcist hands down. although the the blair witch project had me a little spoked, yes the blair with project, even though you never see any ghost or shit like that in that movie, there was just something about that movie that scared the crap out of me. and as for the texas chain saw massacre, that was more like a comedy then a horrow flick.

The Changeling..with George C Scott
i prefer "ghost" stories rather than "slasher " films

In the laboratory.
Just as a twist on this theme, I wonder what movie gave people their worst dreams or maybe caused them to keep the lights on when they went to bed. 'Resident Evil' was the last film to creep me out in that manner. Maybe that makes it my scariest.

Good question,jwm...i enjoy a good horror movie, but as an adult i never get that scared...however as a kid, maybe 13 or 14,i saw a movie starring Vincent Price[believe it or not] called The Tingler. i rode my bike straight home and i had to have my "mommie" check my room before i went to bed. as a grown up i ,ve always wanted to re see that movie .but i guess it is so obscure that no rental place has it..it came out inthe the early 60,s.

I think I may have seen 'The Tingler' on DVD at Bay Street Video here in Toronto. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053363/

the Sixth Sense is pretty scary. Especially that scene where the kid is in that tent; he turns around and that sick ghost girl is throwing up all over the place. Gross.

re:

K I seen pretty much all of those and really didn't get a scare. The one movie that gave me nightmares as a kid was not even listed as a horror. It was a drama. Do any of you remember the Day After? Not the movie released this year. It had to with a nuclear attack on a small kansas community. It came out in 1983. I swear that movie alone gave me nightmares, almost made me fail the 6th grade, and I was afraid to go outside for months. It was a good film for special effects at the time. However, since it was during he latter years of the cold war era, made you think in the back of your mind that this could happen. Overall, maybe a good movie to watch as an adult but as a kid. NO WAY!!!

Hadda vote for the Ring as it is the only movie to scare the crap outta me in several years.

My bro-in-law knew that I rented it and actually timed his phonecall perfectly. Bastard!

The Changeling scared the heck outta me, more than Amityville, Exorcist and the Shining.

Poltergeist

I voted for the Exorcist because it's the scariest on the list. But the one that gave me shivers was Poltergeist. I saw it at the drive-in when it came out and I was just a little kid. The clown's laughter and when he grabbed the boy, made me so scared. I had gone Cubscout camping later and there was somebody playing a tape of laughter and I was freaking out.
There are others that scared me, had scary scenes or maybe would still scare me more even though I'm older now. But I pick Poltergeist because of the intense reaction it got out of me.

Of those posted on the list, my vote goes to "The Shining". Classic psychological horror flick. The blood in the hallways is one of my favorite scenes in that movie.

One not mentioned here, but one of my favorite horror movies is "I Spit on Your Grave". Absolutely brutal.

Carrie.

Everytime I see it, when that hand pops up, I jump about 6 feet!

*my other scariest was 'Driven'...but that's just so bad that it's scary!
