What is the risk of getting SARS when visiting SP or MP? Are the hobbiests going to refrain from going to the SPs with the current outbreak?

I would estimate 100% from an infected person.

I would disagree with that. Obviously the odds would be very high, but there would have to be some individuals whose immune systems would be able to fend off the invading oragnism.

That's not to say that I would go near anyone who I suspected was exposed/infected, but I think the odds would be significantly below 100%.

Not quite 100%...but close!

The odds would be below 100%..but only barely.

From the reports available, this is a highly transimissible disease, especially when there is any kind of direct contact. Factor in DFK and you'd be almost certain to get infected from a carrier SP.

Perhaps a minute few in the population might be naturally immune (like those who have had SARS and recovered) but most of the rest of us would catch it (almost) for certain if exposed via an SP.

The odds are 0 % if she doesn't have SARS.

If she does have SARS, then probably close to 100%.

If you are asking about the general probability that you'll get SARS from an SP, then it's probably only 10x (more or less) that you'll get it from her (dfk etc) versus getting SARS from S/O, co-worker, etc.

voice of reason and sanity?

I fully concur... and advise some measure of caution but please not paranoia. it takes a bit of effort to contract, close body contact. and thus far most people seem to be shaking it off.

let the phd. types do there job, and analyse this thing.

I've heard terrible stories lately of asian friends of mine being subject to racial profiling, people avoiding them.

SARS makes me nervous, but the sociological impact has me concerned.

this thing is a VIRUS... it doesnt care about whether its in a chinese patient or a vietnamese patient or a swedish patient or a dingo ....

people should CHILL OUT and think please.

Scary if it turns out to be true.

I personally guarentee you that my information sources on SARS are much better than CNN. CNN is approximately 36 hours out of date on this stuff.

thats all I'm going to say for the moment.
gods I hope the iraq war doesnt spread too much.

The answer is properly no. Just like all the other business that are affected by SARS, business will pick up once there are no reports of new infection.

Typo? or trying to be funny?
Yes it was a typo. Yes I was being funny. During the summer lots of tourist from the states come to the city (Toronto). Trying to get a better price. Toronto is not the cheapest sp city but a great deal for US tourist. Why do they think Toronto sp subscribe to PRICELINE (name your own price).

I agree with the above post. We should all take a little break from the hobby for the well-being of our SPs and our fellow Johns.

It's true...

...he said that SARS can be passed on by a person with no symptoms.
That's why the quarantine is ten days long. You can be a carrier for days without knowing you're infected.

That's what makes this so scary...thousands of infected people could be spreading the disease without knowing it. Once the symptoms start showing, there's a whole new crop of even more thousands of future victims that are spreading the virus. In a short time, the disease could have spread so quickly that a true epidemic would result.

Dr. Low (sp?) is now quarantined. He's the one who recently claimed:

* I've seen over 20 patients, but due to pre-cautionary measures, I have not infected SARS
* you're not going to see me go away any time soon, <cough> <cough>
