From the article - The word "chief" can be used as a slur, but it happens also to be an honorific title

This stuff is getting seriously scary. So consumed are we with sensitivity, hurt feelings, and offending someone, its getting to the point thinking a bad thought will get you in hot water.
Do you agree with the indigenous author of that article, that schools need to teach what horrifying things happened in the residential schools?

They need to teach history, which includes such horrors and much worse. But I'm not sure how that is relevant to what Kathleen said.

Just when did you imagine bad thoughts didn't get people into trouble?

As you must have read the CBC piece in the link, you'll see that hamermill's title entirely misrepresented it, and the TDSB action of a week or more ago (and discussed on TERB back then) that the writer — thoughtfully — criticizes.

It's speaking the thoughts and acting on them that heats things up, given that folks often hear and read what they want to, not what was actually said.

,..."Toronto school boards to scrub chiefs in titles,... can only use manager now".

Yep, I can see how you would agree with that stupidity,... which is what the article is about.

But I guess you would have to actually read the article,... before you went off on another one of your racist rants.

Might need to change that to "personager".

But yes, this is a few bureaucrats that have nothing to do with teaching putting in a policy to show the boss how hard working they are. A lot of the changes that people bitch about are needed but this one is just silly and I can pretty much guarantee that they didn't consult many in the indigenous community.

Agreed on both counts.

And how much over $100k are these bureaucrats making,... along with gold plated retirement,... to produce this BS.

I think no matter what you say and do, someone will always remain unhappy and hold a grievance.
I understand that’s generally the experience of the inappropriate, ignorant, out of touch, insensitive (et al.) among us.

I was just speaking metaphorically.
Sorry I'm not clear on your answer. Do you agree with the author that lessons covering the horrors of the residential school system need to be added to the TDSB's curriculum?

Yes, the article in post 1 was written by an indigenous person, who is pointing out that this change does nothing for indigenous people while the changes they asked for have not been implemented.

Opinion piece

The only take away from this article,... is simply the stupidity of the initiative, and then a lot of opinions from the author,... who wouldn't even have a soap box to stand on if it wasn't for said stupidity.

I did speak for myself - as a person who doesn’t seem to experience what she (Kathleen) seems to experience.

I had hoped “et al.” would be enough to cover them as-well, but we could just go with ‘purveyors of inequitable beliefs and/or actions, both conscious and unconscious’ to keep it simple and inclusive...

Sorry I'm not clear on your answer. Do you agree with the author that lessons covering the horrors of the residential school system need to be added to the TDSB's curriculum?
I don’t totally understand this, but an indigenous friend was part of the group that re-wrote at-least the history curriculum in Ontario 4 or 5 years ago. ‘Residential School system’ is a part of the new curriculum that’s been in Ontario high schools for a while now. Well before TRC wrapped-up.

I don’t believe school boards have a choice over what is/isn’t curriculum - the Peel and TDSB parents who protested the sex ed. curriculum a couple years ago seemed to misunderstand this.

I was at an event run by TDSB last year where they did an indigenous land acknowledgement, which suggests to me that they’re taking all of this very (justifiably) seriously.

It makes a ton of sense to me that organizationally they would take a look at their unconsciously racialized language. Sure the word in it’s present use pre-dates colonial oppression in BNA, but this hardly is the first example of a word we retire after it became a symbol for oppression.

What interests me about this is how ‘chief,’ if it is indeed recognized as oppressive language by indigenous leaders, will be used by indigenous peoples going forward. Will they follow suit and de-anglicize? Will they go back to Ogimaa or whatever? Will each indigenous linguistic group have a different name/title?

It doesn’t seem likely in the communities I've spent the most time in.

Even odder when the actual word in question has nothing to do with indians
It has been used since middle ages and has roots in latin

Since when would native indians be english speaking and call themselves chief before white men came?

They technically stole the word from us

This entire board seems to be infested with right wing, antiquated, racist ideology. Not sure how a Canadian escort review board turned in to a trump wet dream but....here we are. Didn't realize so many "hobbiests" were actually just skinheads until I started reading the the threads on this forum. I was naive to think as Canadians we were some how morally much more sound. I've learned from this.

I want to people to refrain from using the title "Chef", as it is too close to the word chief. I prefer "Person in charge of making and cooking food".

All it takes is someone to add an "i" to the word and next thing you know, a "trigger" has appeared and therapy will be required.

Bleeding heart SJWs are going to be the downfall of western society
I hear it at work from the millenials, here on terb and in everyday conversation that as Canadians we are morally superior than our American brothers—what a crock of elitist shit

The solution is obvious, is it not? The Native population must stop using languages of the invaders. They should strive to retain their heritage and reverse the centuries of kulturkampf. We should help them by cutting all financial support, so they can regain pride and build the kind of society they want.

Once again conservatism is a teaching tool to a naive SJW. The work is never-ending I tells ya!

The word “Chief” is of English descent. It’s first use dates back to the 1300’s and was derived from Latin.

http://www.etymonline.com/word/chief

It is not a word that was appropriated from Native culture. It pre-dates the arrival of European settlers in North America by centuries. It refers to the leader of any group of people.

In today’s world, “Chief” is frequently used to refer to the person in charge of a native tribe/band. However, it is used frequently in many other contexts including: Police Chief, Fire Chief, CIA Station Chief, Chief of Staff, or even to POTUS as Commander in Chief.

Thus, I think in this instance the TDSB may be off the mark in its efforts to be culturally sensitive. I still applaud the effort and I don’t think changing the job titles is a big deal; I just think that the word Chief is not problematic.
